- Henry and Enid with Leslie and Wilbur
The year is 1907, the end of an era for the Lacey family. Enid's spiritual endeavors seem to have worked - for the first time in 45 years, not a single family member has passed away in the last five years. As for relationships, things haven't been quite so happy. Frank and Nina, Oscar and Lola, and Henry and Enid have all divorced within the time since we last met them. Henry thought that Enid's spirituality had gone too far and compromised her Christianity. He tried to lead her back, but eventually decided divorce was the only option. After the tragedy in England, Oscar's followed in his father's footsteps and leaned on various women to ease his pain, before eventually divorcing Lola. Frank and Nina's divorce is the most amicable - a quiet thing, so they can safely pursue new lovers. Ned, Miriam, and Alta are still going strong, but Ned and Miriam have called off their engagement - they've got plenty of scandal, married or not, and the long engagement is becoming more suspicious and harmful than anything. It's not all bad in the romance department, however. Hastséoltoi has remarried, to a teacher named Phineas Perch. Ned likes him fine, but Frank finds him too stuffy, and Oscar can't stand him at all. Frank remarries to a Jewish woman named Mehitabel, and Nina marries Edwin Newton, a young scientist. Oscar stays with his one-night women, but Lola meets a nice man her age named Virgil, a doctor. August gets engaged to a woman named Lucretia Jones, the daughter of a general. Elsie gets married as well, to a man named Azariah Rosenthal. Azariah is a florist, and Elsie helps him tend to their own garden at home. No new babies are welcomed, but with the supposed family curse broken and new families starting, there will be more to come.
