She told him early on that she would only marry him when they both turned 18 - ostensibly so they could both finish their education. However, as the date of her 18th birthday drew closer, she realised that she was filled with dread at the prospect - not because she disliked Leslie, but because she could not see herself as his wife. The broken engagement made things rather awkward with her family, all of whom have come to rather like Leslie.Minnie catches Adriel in flagrante with his mistress, their landlord's wife, and is furious, even as Adriel explains that was it not for their close relationship, Augusta would not have convinced her husband to lower their rent, thus allowing them to afford their comfortable, if not glamorous flat. Seeing that she will not yield, he agrees to divorce her.The Ravenswood family is devastated when their patriarch, Robert, dies when a ship sailing to America hits an iceberg. Another passenger was his nephew Leopold, who, despite being only 14, was fascinated by travel and wanted to see the country where his uncle spent his childhood. Robert is mourned deeply by his loving wife of 28 years, and their 6 surviving children out of the 11 they had, to whom he had always been a doting father. Leopold's death hits his siblings and his guardian, Adam, close. By sheer coincidence, Minnie, whom they had never met, was on the ship too, and died as well. Her funeral is attended by her aunt, Frances, and the three half-sisters she never met: Elsie, Nellie, and Alma.A year after her husband's death, Frances marries Eli Cavendish, an American man 19 years her senior who lost his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and three grandsons on the very samed ship where Robert, Minnie, and Leopold died. There is no passion between them, and they are happy to keep their union a mariage blanc - they find each other good companions who can understand what the other went through and who simply do not want to die alone.Elsie marries her fiancé, Percy, as soon as they save enough to purchase a small, but respectable flat. Peter gets engaged to a rosy-cheeked shorthand typist. While their backgrounds are rather different, Peter having grown up in relative wealth and Sophie being one of five children in a lower middle-class family, a happier match was never made, and Peter seems absolutely smitten with Sophie. Nellie gets engaged to a bewhiskered solicitor named Virgil, who introduces Alma, whom he gets along with splendidly, to his cousin. Alma and Jasper quickly fall for each other and marry.masculine list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/191050/124079
