It's the turn of the century: 1897. Deborah has stayed single, settling into the life of a double-widower and her old age. As for the Ravenswoods in New Mexico, they're doing well. Ned and Miriam haven't married yet, but this year, they welcome their first child: a little girl named Lottie. Frank, Oscar, and August have also gotten married, to young American women named Nina, Lola, and Josie. But a shocking scandal shakes the Lacey family to their core when Henry and Enid's children Edmond and Norah are murdered in their sleep. Henry and Enid heard the shots, and were able to leave with their eldest son, Victor, and their two newest children, Leslie and Wilbur. The world is rocked to know that the only surviving son of the late author Simon Lacey was wrapped up in the bodysnatching business with his brother-in-law. Now that Jack's off in America, Henry's been working by himself. But he doesn't have Jack's knowledge, and he ends up working with - and working up - the wrong people. Edmond and Norah were killed by a rival gang of robbers. Henry had unknowingly stole from a potter's grave they had claimed, and they'd come to teach Henry a lesson. The deaths have put a heavy strain on Henry and Enid's relationship, and neither knows if it'll ever be fixed again.
