Paramour [32] Adam Théodore Monet
Harvey & Adam
Joan and Adam die in an accident involving a rogue horse cart, and are mourned deeply by their family and friends. They leave behind four children. Frances half-heartedly offers to take Lydia, Antonia, Richard, and Leopold in. However, in addition to grieving for her daughter Louise, who died shortly before Joan did of a typhus breakout at her boarding school, she has her work cut out for her already with 8 surviving children of her own.
Much to everyone's surprise, Adam decides to take the children of his friend and lover in. While naturally shocked by the loss of their parents, the children adjust relatively quickly, as Adam was around them so often anyway that they have come to view him as an uncle.
Just a few months after Joan's death, Caroline dies as well, of ovarian cancer. The matriarch's funeral is well-attended - her many friends in high place all come pay their respects, as do her surviving brothers, whom she had not seen since she eloped with Absalom.
Minnie, aged only 15, gets engaged to a boy she met at a fair and fell in love with almost immediately. Her uncle and aunt, who have raised her since her mother's death, do not much approve of the engagement, considering her much too young and her fiancé unsuitable - he is a Navajo orphan who has moved to England with his brothers a year ago, after having escaped from an American Indian boarding school.
