Deborah and Vincent
The year is 1887. Three losses have hit the extended Lacey family in the last five years. Deborah was left widowed in 1884, when Agostino passed away of a sudden heart attack. Jesse died in 1883, shortly after the death of his beloved Phoebe. His death stumps the coroner, as he was in good health, but rumors say he died of grief. Perhaps the most devastating loss is that of Kitty and Jack's second eldest, Billy, in 1886. At only 11 years old, Billy's death was a shock to everyone - an accident after falling off the roof he and Ned were playing on. This devastating loss convinces Jack to focus on his family, and he breaks things off with his rich mistress, whom he's been entangled with for years now. Though she has her own family now, she is still angered by this, and vows not to cover for any of his crimes again. But it hasn't all been bad. Now that The Adventures of Sir Birdwhistle is published, Simon has had more time to focus on himself - and others. Specifically, one other person: Lucie-Cécile Saint-Pierre, the widowed daughter of his publisher. Lucie-Cécile is quiet and intelligent, a well-read, well-educated woman. All her sisters are socialites, but Lucie-Cécile has never been one for parties. She and Simon spark a quick friendship, and it doesn't take long for it to blossom into romance. With them both having been loveless for ages, they're married within half a year. Kitty and Henry are overjoyed at their father's newfound love, and the family love Lucie-Cécile. This year also brought new love for Deborah, in the form of another well-off immigrant named Vincent Lestrange. Vincent had been a good friend of Agostino's, and had also lost his wife suddenly, with no children. He offered Deborah his condolences, and began to visit frequently for tea and chats. Their mutual loss created an intimate bond quickly, and they began to realize that despite their different backgrounds, they had a lot in common. A close friendship was formed, and two years later, a courtship. Now Vincent and Deborah have finally wed. Kitty is happy to see her find love after loss, in a much purer way than she had with Agostino. Henry still harbors resentment against his mother and doesn't speak to her. Speaking of Henry, he's had his own joys this year: he and Enid welcomed identical triplet sons: Victor, Edmund, and Edgar. They were shocked to be having triplets, but Enid has a family history of multiples (she, herself, is a twin). The young couple have their work cut out for them, but they'll be alright.
