Simon and Deborah with Kitty, Phoebe, Agatha, and Henry
It's 1867, and Simon and Deborah's marriage is still going strong. They've welcomed two new children: Agatha and Henry. The babies were born three years apart, and Henry comes one year after the loss of their first son, Owen. Over the years, Owen's bouts of sickness became more frequent and severe, eventually leaving him bedridden. It was discovered that he had polio, and he passed away from complications when he was 8. This devastated the couple. Initally, Simon retreated even more into himself, working longer and longer to keep his mind off things and help to pay for the funeral. Deborah stopped her friendly chatter and stayed mostly at home, doting on the children she had left. After two weeks, she knew she and the children wouldn't be able to heal with Simon so absent, and he agreed to stop working as much. Simon began to focus his energy on being more present in his children's lives. Every night, he would gather Kitty, Phoebe, and Agatha and tell them a grand story of the brave knight Sir Birdwhistle, and his sword crafted by Simon's own ancestor. Simon's adventures with the children gave Deborah time for much-needed rest, which in turn helped her heal. It's a tradition he still keeps up now that Henry's here. Kitty's constant questions have challenged Simon to make the stories more and more detailed, and for Phoebe to stick around there must never be a dull moment. As for the little ones, Agatha loves to hear about Sir Birdwhistle's trusty horse, Maeve, and Owen's so little he usually sleeps through the whole thing.
