Zoraida has become a bit of a troublemaker, pulling pranks on her parents and siblings that alternately amuse and frustrate them. Anselmo and Adela have a huge argument as Anselmo feels she is favoring her children with Esquivel, and she moves out to live with her parents, upsetting the children, but they make up and she moves back.

To everyone's sadness, Onorato passes away of illness. Alexandre, Francisco, José, and Ximena hold a funeral for him on Diego's farm, with Adela, Anselmo, and her parents also attending. Calista and Esquivel make and hang up drawings of their late, beloved pet. Even little Antonio is upset. Francisco has met a girl he likes, the beautiful blond Beatriz Caballero. To Adela and Anselmo's chagrin, he gets her pregnant. Anselmo feels they are too young to get married, which raises up some old issues between him and Francisco. Francisco is sad his father couldn't see it, but is thrilled at the birth of his daughter Lucia. Despite a lot of gossip, he and Beatriz do not get married as her father refused permission because Francisco's father was executed by the inquisition. Adela is happy to have grandchildren, but wishes they could have waited to get married, as does Anselmo.

To Adela's horror, Alexandre and Diego decide to join it. She begs Alexandre not to go with his "friend" and join the uprising, fearing he will be killed. Ximena and José, who barely remember their father, also beg him not to go. However, Francisco is gung-ho, which makes Beatriz's father dislike him even more. However, for Lucia's sake, Francisco does not join the rebellion. Luckily, Diego and Alexandre are fine, and the revolt dies down without further affecting the family.

When on a visit to an alchemist's conference in the city, Esquivel is robbed by a pickpocket. Adela takes up more sewing work to regain the family's lost money. Esquivel's brother Alexandre, an artist, comes to help out having had financial bad times of his own.

Adela however remembers her twin aunts and rolls her eyes. Ximena and José look alike, with their father's blue eyes and their mother's straight brown hair.

Unfortunately, the government decides to persecute non-Christians. Esquivel's practice of alchemy puts him under suspicion, and he is arrested. Adela is terrified and begs her and Esquivel's families to help him, but nothing happens. She tries to hide her fear from the children, but Alexandre and Francisco are old enough to realize what is happening.

Sadly, Esquivel is executed by the Inquisition. Adela is disconsolate. The only bright spot is the birth of their last child, a son who is named after his father. In bad straits financially, Adela must move in with her family, bringing the children along. Alexandre, Francisco, and even little José and Ximena are all extremely saddened by the death of their father, and Onorato sits by the door, howling in grief.

In her grief, Adela is comforted by an apothecary named Anselmo de Villarreal who has wavy blond hair and green eyes and lives near her parents. She still loves Esquivel, but she finds some comfort from Anselmo and becomes pregnant by him. There is a hasty marriage, and a daughter named Leocadia who looks just like her father is born a few months after the wedding. Adela is the subject of a lot of talk both in her old village and the last, but she shakes it off. However, the anger of Alexandre and Francsico and their mother's remarriage so soon after their father died is less easy to deal with. Francisco is no longer carefree enough to enjoy playing in the garden.

Alexandre accidentally reveals that he has a crush on his friend Diego. However, Diego is thrilled to find out and starts a relationship with him, also inheriting his family farm. Onorato is getting old, and Anselmo treats him with his herbs. Alexandre, Francisco, José and Ximena are all worried, since Onorato is one of their few reminders of their father. Zoraida has become a bit of a troublemaker, pulling pranks on her parents and siblings that alternately amuse and frustrate them. Anselmo and Adela have a huge argument as Anselmo feels she is favoring her children with Esquivel, and she moves out to live with her parents, upsetting the children, but they make up and she moves back.

To everyone's sadness, Onorato passes away of illness. Alexandre, Francisco, José, and Ximena hold a funeral for him on Diego's farm, with Adela, Anselmo, and her parents also attending. Calista and Esquivel make and hang up drawings of their late, beloved pet. Even little Antonio is upset. Francisco has met a girl he likes, the beautiful blond Beatriz Caballero. To Adela and Anselmo's chagrin, he gets her pregnant. Anselmo feels they are too young to get married, which raises up some old issues between him and Francisco. Francisco is sad his father couldn't see it, but is thrilled at the birth of his daughter Lucia. Despite a lot of gossip, he and Beatriz do not get married as her father refused permission because Francisco's father was executed by the inquisition. Adela is happy to have grandchildren, but wishes they could have waited to get married, as does Anselmo.

To prove himself to Beatriz's father, Francisco gets work as a scribe. Diego and Alexandre plot revolution and teach little Sabina to play cards and chess. Adela and Anselmo also join in her games. Even Leocadia will sometimes play with her. Calista and Esquivel become better artists every day, to the pride of their mother and stepfather. A family nearby is executed by the Inquisition, leaving their daughter Susana an orphan. Only Adela and Anselmo will take her in out of all the villagers. Toescape the shame and sadness of her family's death, Susana takes Anselmo's surname. She comes to enjoy cooking, often with the help of Alexandre who becomes a professional cook.

Anselmo turns 50, making him feel very old. Privately, he wishes Adela's first husband had managed to create a Fountain ofYouth before he died. More worryingly, there is a peasant uprising. To Adela's horror, Alexandre and Diego decide to join it. She begs Alexandre not to go with his "friend" and join the uprising, fearing he will be killed. Ximena and José, who barely remember their father, also beg him not to go. However, Francisco is gung-ho, which makes Beatriz's father dislike him even more. However, for Lucia's sake, Francisco does not join the rebellion. Luckily, Diego and Alexandre are fine, and the revolt dies down without further affecting the family.

Alexandre and Diego are arrested for their revolutionary views and activity, to Adela's total horror. She doesn't think she can bear it if her son is executed just like her husband was. Luckily, Alexandre and Diego are released.

Lucia develops an interest in collecting plants and bugs, just like her uncle José, who is very pleased to have his little helper. Ximena meets a boy named Felipe de Paz, who she crushes on. She gets pregnant, but he leaves town when he finds out. Anselmo and Adela attempt to track him down, but find nothing. Ximena is heartbroken, and worried remembering the shame Francisco's lover Beatriz faced for getting pregnant out of wedlock. Ximena names her son after her father and stepfather. Adela looks back on her life with the birth of her fourth grandchild. She has faced a lot of tragedy, but now she is happy and hopes her family will be too.
