STARTING COUPLE – YEAR 0 (2000)
Location: Sacramento, CA
DH [25] Justin David Green – Biochemistry Technician (b. 1975)
DW [25] Shannon Teresa (Collins) Green – Costume Designing Assistant (b. 1975)
YEAR 1 (2001): Oh no! There’s an earthquake in California. It’s significant but not catastrophic. Sacramento is hit, though not as badly as San Francisco, and neither of the Greens are hurt. There was minor damage to their apartment.
YEAR 2 (2002): The family makes a big move to South Korea! Justin’s company opened a branch in Seoul and he was selected as part of the team. They decided to accept the adventure, since they don’t have kids yet it makes it easy to give it a try at least for a few years. Shannon keeps her job part-time by consulting remotely while she works on her Korean and looks for a job locally.
YEAR 3 (2003): Baby arrives! The couple had discussed their interest in adopting at some point, and decided to do so right away when they were able to adopt locally in South Korea. Yun-ah Erin is a year old, and they kept her original Korean first name and gave her a middle name special to them.
(Note: At least for this one since it was the first addition, I decided to first roll a d3 to determine Birth, Adoption, or Other, before rolling to see what they got in that category. I like chance, so I wanted to see if they would in general be an “adopting family” or not. I rolled a d2, so I then rolled to see what kind of Adoption outcome they had. )
YEAR 4 (2004): The young family gets a pet, a fluffy brown hamster they name Mocha.
YEAR 5 (2005): After moving into a house, Justin suggests they get another pet. Shannon says maybe, and then Justin shows up with a young chicken one day! Shannon rolls her eyes and makes a joke about it showing up in a pot (this doesn’t go over well). So, she tells him he’d better keep it in the small backyard when it gets bigger. When they ask three-year-old Yun-ah what they should name it, she proclaims Makki because it’s the “youngest” member of the family.
YEAR 6 (2006): Justin sprains his ankle while running and has to stay home for a week. He enjoys being able to spend some more quality time with the girls.
YEAR 7 (2007): Justin gets a raise! The couple decides now might be a good time to consider another child.
YEAR 8 (2008): Shannon gets a very bad case of pneumonia, but recovers.
YEAR 9 (2009): Shannon gives birth to a baby girl! They want her first name to work well in Korea and the US and choose Hana Kelly. Her big sister is so excited to have a playmate.
YEAR 10 (2010): Following hamster Mocha’s demise last year (it lasted a long time for a little critter!), the Greens give in to Yun-ah’s pleading for a more substantial pet that can live inside (Makki the chicken is still hanging on outside). The family gets a cat and, fittingly, name it Nabi “kitty”.
YEAR 11 (2011): Oh no! Justin loses his job due to cutbacks. The family makes the hard decision to pack up to move back to the US, where they think it will be easier to get a new job for Justin and for Shannon to perhaps progress further in her career.
YEAR 12 (2012): The family moves back to the US, this time to San Diego, CA where Shannon gets a full-time job (still as a Costume Design Assistant) for a theatre company there. Justin finds a job in the medical field at a biotechnology company that will put his chemical engineering background to work.
YEAR 13 (2013): Shannon gets a pay raise after a production she took lead on did very well.
YEAR 14 (2014): Alas, the chicken Makki has finally given up the ghost (no one’s that sad, truthfully). Justin suggests that this time they get a dog and Shannon agrees wholeheartedly. They get a puppy and now Justin, a Star Wars fan, has a new running partner named Artoo (after trusty sidekick R2-D2).
YEAR 15 (2015): Hana recovers from a case of chicken pox that became severe with other complications that, thankfully, appear to have no lasting effects.
YEAR 16 (2016): The greens welcome twin boys! Neither expected they would have multiples, but after they announce it to their families, Justin finds out that his great-grandmother was a twin so that explains it. Their names are Conner Andrew and Brennan Archer.
YEAR 17 (2017): The Greens are getting ready for a whole new adventure! When they discovered that there were newborn quadruplets at the same adoption agency that they used in Korea, who would be split up unless someone was willing to take all of them, they jumped on it, feeling that their family might be a good match. The babies are arriving soon! They are: Jae Ryan, Kiran Cait, Nari Quinn, Isang Finn.
YEAR 18 (2018): Hana wanted a pet of her own, so her parents got her something small and manageable, a beta fish for her to keep in her room. She named it Jade because it’s bright green.
YEAR 19 (2019): Shannon changes to a totally new career field! Amid their full, hectic life she found enjoyment posting kid- and budget-friendly recipes and videos on a blog and Instagram. People loved her recipes and her sharing about their life as parents with their interesting brood of children. Her following grew and she has decided to become a full-time food and family blogger which allows her to spend more time at home and explore her hobby at the same time. Now she’s been recently approached to write a cookbook!
YEAR 20 (2020): The Greens hire Rachel, a friend of Yun-ah's and a photography major, as a live-in nanny and photography teacher/assistant for Shannon's blog. It's a win-win as she doesn't have to pay rent, makes some money during college, and also gets some material for her portfolio and her name on a popular project which should help her after she graduates.
