2 - A Particular Ardour
The pope is supposed to be celibate. Everyone knows this. However, with what some might describe as shocking infrequency, the pope is found not to be celibate. Everyone knows this, too. A woman, several generations ago, caught the eye of the supreme pontiff, and naturally they began a clandestine relationship. It is said that she bore him a son - this son, your great grandfather, was not given titles by his father, but instead simply a large sum of money. Being a clever, enterprising young man, he used this to buy a small but promising bank trading in a city up north, and grew it until it was a veritable financial empire. So, here’s to great grandfather and his disregard for the rules!
DH: Marco Leonardo Piero Roselli (35) (Son of Lorenzo Marco Bernardo and Guilietta Caterina Piera, nee Grazioli)
DW: Pia Maddalena Filippa Roselli (32) (Daughter of Antonio Bartlomeo Alessandro Pirovano and Maria Lucrezia Margherita, nee Damasco)
DS: Lorenzo Biagio Niccolo Roselli (15)
DD: Antonia Marsilia Piera Roselli (13)
DS: Andrea Francesco Bartolomeo Roselli (11)
DD: Giuliana Alessandra Maria Roselli (10)
Pia Maddalena Piero Pirovano was the only surviving child to Antonio Bartlomeo Alessandro Pirovano and Maria Lucrezia Margherita, nee Damasco. Her brothers both died of the black plague years ago as as did her mother. She came from a wealthy family; her father, Antonio, was a successful banker in Milan, keeping up the family business her grandfather started years before. As the only child to Antonio, his business and fortune, would go to her husband. So when her father passed away in 1390, his business transferred to Marco.
Marco had been employed at the bank since the two wed in 1382, knowing one day it was to be his. He was a hard-working man, smart and energetic, with the right brain to be able to handle such a venture. Marco knew of the banks origins, too; that Pia's great grandfather was the not-so celibate Pope. He had been sworn to secrecy with this information, as the family was afraid of the consequences if the public learned that the bank was built on "bastard money." He promised up and down the Holy Cross that he would never tell anyone, but 10 years into running this bank alone, was proving to get more difficult by the day.
