War between Venice and Siena
Lorenzo and Maria's relationship was strained for two years, due to the latter's firmness that a union between their eldest son, Luca, and Salvaza Calzolai would bring Luca nothing but misery. Eventually, however - and to the shock of the bankers of Venice backing Signor Giardiola - Lorenzo agreed with his wife, and called off the betrothal, rationalizing that the last thing Venice as a city - as a republic - needed was more Calzolai influence. The Giardiola household was much more peaceful after this, and less than a year later Maria birthed a seventh son, Giacomo!
Things were not peaceful in Venice, though. Upon news of the broken betrothal, the powers of Siena declared war on Venice, and a bloody three years followed. Poor Nico Giardiola was a casualty of urban warfare. Peace was negotiated with various concessions that did not include a betrothal to Salvaza Calzolai. The Giardiolas would leave her to live whatever life she wished, as long as it was far, far away from Venice.
With their older children, except for Luca, Lorenzo and Maria decided to search for spouses outside Venice to expand its influence (but no Senese). For Damiano, they found a pleasant, if shy, daughter of Spanish merchants. Damiano and Clementina married a year ago, and recently welcomed identical twins Maria and Simona, after a difficult pregnancy that left "Tina" bedridden for most of it. Additionally, Pia has become betrothed to a French ambassador, Monsieur de Champdivers, who has five sisters back in Paris: Louise, Élisabeth, Marguerite, Henriette, and Christine. Pia grew up with only brothers, so she looked forward to such a sisterly bond. Andrea was also betrothed to the daughter of an Austrian ambassador, Herr Griem. Andrea thinks Hedwig is a weird name.
