A dreadful plague hits the city in 1406 - no one is allowed to enter or leave Milan, and the bank suffers greatly because of it. The financial toll of the plague, however, is not as great as the emotional one. Simona, the love of Niccolaio's life, contracts the illness, and dies after only a few days, leaving him with 7 children aged between 10 and 1. Mercifully, no one else in the family catches the plague - but Niccolaio is at a loss for what to do. His brother and sister-in-law do their best to support him, but they have 5 children of their own to care for. After a few months, Niccolaio meets Emma, the eldest daughter of a once well-to-do family fallen on hard times, and a widow who lost her husband to the plague. Niccolaio offers to let her and her infant daughter, Martina, stay with the Lucetti for a few months, aware that Milan is a dangerous place for an unmarried woman and her child. They quickly fall in love, and are married a few months after the first anniversary of Simona's death, althogh Niccolaio feels guilty for replacing Simona so soon. The reaction of the children is varied - Alessandro and Isabetta are suspicious and resentful towards Emma; Maddalena, Giovanni, and Lorenzo are simply curious; Corelia and Giulio will never know their real mother, and fully accept Emma in her place. Niccolaio and Emma's union proves a fertile one - their first child, Celestino, is born just a few months after their wedding, quickly followed by a daughter, Sebastiana, and a son, Doriano. For their part, Tommaso and Filippa welcome one more child, a quiet, well-behaved baby daughter whom they fittingly name Serena.Still und geborgen, frei ohne Sorgenhttp://www.behindthename.com/pnl/185597
