He had gotten a tip that Gris and Henry were going to live on a moor in Wales, and sent Betrys and Gerallt to find them. As soon as they found out Gris and Henry's true identities, they informed Lord Shelby and Esmé.
Lord Shelby hates Gris. It's a long, convoluted story, that he doesn't feel like getting into, but he will anyway.
The thing Lord Shelby hates most is being tricked. He has this idea of himself as suspicious, hard-nosed, on top of stuff, and not remotely gullible. And he's set in his ways and doesn't like being challenged. You can see how falling for anything is pretty unpleasant for him.
Before Henry met Gris, she was a con person on the side. She would, in disguise, go around pedaling mundane goods, and use her amazing acting skill to convince people that they were special. She sold them for extravagant prices, and made a pretty good living off of it.
Lord Shelby was her favorite client. No matter how many times she tricked him, he would buy another thing from her, like an heirloom teakettle, or a superior hairbrush for Esmé, or a 24-karat gold ring that was actually just painted. Because Gris was convincing. But mostly because he liked her.
And then she decided to be a thief full-time. She liked the risk better. And she was running out of ideas for what to sell. That's when Lord Shelby realized he had been tricked. He wallowed in his anger for a while, until Gris and Henry robbed him. That was the final straw. He decided to get even.
Needless to say, he was furious when Gris escaped from prison. He started trying to find Gris constantly. For ten years, he and Esmé searched. And now that thry've found them, they're ecstatic.
Five years ago, Lord Shelby, Esmé, Gerallt, Betrys, and their bodyguards showed up at Gris and Henry's door.
Gris, Henry, Noelle, Larkin, and Ariane fled. They escaped out the window, and ran for the nearest city. They hid in the shrubs until they thought they had lost Lord Shelby and his people. They sent the kids to Eira and Nat's estate. Noelle, Larkin, and Ariane hitched a ride in some nice rich people's carriage.
Gris and Henry have been on the run from Lord Shelby for years, but they know he'll find them soon.
Back on the estate and powerless to do anything, life for Eira, Katherine, Raphael, and Nat and their families has continued. Eira and Nat arranged Molly's marriage to a wealthy merchant, Leopold Blanchet. She likes him, but her heart belongs to somebody else. They have a daughter, Magdalena. Becky married her boyfriend, Gilead, and they also have a daughter, Cilia.
