Shortly after Damon's birth, Annice fell deathly ill. No one knew why or how. Within days she had passed. In the period following, Simon started to distance himself from Joan. He worked longer, stayed out later, and hardly ever saw Joan let alone the kids.
And Joan hated it. Absolutely despised it. She lived and breathed for their family, loved Simon with every fiber of her being, more than she thought possible. But Simon kept pushing her away. When he did come home, he was almost always drunk and Simon was not your happy drunk. He came home in a tizzy, temperamental and as changeable as the weather.
Joan tolerated things for a couple of years. She figured maybe Simon needed his space. She figured he needed time to grieve. She figured maybe he started feeling cooped up at home with their remaining two kids and a wife clamoring for his atttention. They did start their family very quickly. Maybe he just hadn't had time to adjust. She tolerated him even when he began to hit her.
Joan's last straw came when he hit Tobias. The sound of Simon's arrival had woken the boy up. Following the commotion, Tobias saw his father swing at his mother and, the blood of his courageous family running through his veins, the boy stepped in to save his mother. Simon's hand cracked against the boy's cheek.
Joan threw Simon out that night.
Shortly after, Joan met the dashing Lorenzo Fontana. A widower with a daughter about the age Annice would have been, Lorenzo understood the pain Joan must be feeling. Before she had officially divorced Simon, Joan began seeing Lorenzo, the two getting caught up in each other.
The minute the divorce was finalized, Joan, in an act of insane courage, asked Lorenzo if he would marry her. He agreed, gushing about how he had held the same plans.
Before any marriage plans could be made, Joan gave birth to her daughter with Lorenzo. Líadan is a favorite with all of her family, grandfather and grandmother included.
