Knowing cats and dogs are stereotypical enemies, Garrett gives him a strong “no”, but Cindy wants the puppy, who Sam names Mocha for her chocolate-colored fur, to stay. After a long discussion, Garrett has a change of heart, giving Sam the condition that he must train and take care of her, housebreaking included. Garrett and Cindy would help their son along the way, but he would be Mocha’s sole caregiver.

Mocha gets involved in a hit-and-run while chasing a squirrel during a walk with Sam. Sam brings her home in tears and profusely apologizes, but because it was an accident, both parents forgive him. As it turns out, Mocha has broken her back left leg and needs surgery to fix it. She then spends the next week or so in physical therapy to get her leg back into shape.

Cindy and Sam get into an argument about the girl he’s just eloped with. She thinks he’s too young to marry, let alone elope, but Sam argues that his new wife makes him happy and that’s all that matters. It’s only when Cindy meets Sam’s wife for the first time that she backs off.
