After working with his brother-in-law for a time, Jan bought a farm of his own in the area. There's a large Dutch community, and the Van Donks speak Dutch at home and at church. Elsje practices English with her American-born sister-in-law, and wants to make sure Alida knows it well before she starts school. She wanted their two new daughters to have more 'American' names, since this is their home now.
