Renaissance Italy Congrats (Round 1)
This is a congrats game set in renaissance Italy (the year is 1380) following 2 fictional families in the Republic of Florence. (This is based off of saphirdufeu's royal congrats from a few months ago.) If you want to add a story, that would be great, but if you don't that's totally okay too. You can answer the suggested questions, or make up your own story, or both. I'll update it as often as I can.
(I really don't know what I'm doing here so please correct me if you notice any mistakes or historical inaccuracies.)

Here's the first family:
DH was a merchant in the city. He was fairly wealthy and everyone was surprised when he married a penniless orphan. They've been married for about a year now and they're expecting their first child (they don't know what gender yet). Recently, DH's grandfather, Lord Agnolo died and he happened to be next in line to inherit his estate. He was hesitant to pack up and move to the country, but DW pointed out that plague outbreaks have been frequent in the city and it would be better to raise a family where there is less plague. She convinced him eventually, so they gave the house to DH's sister and her family and moved to Formaggio Estate.
(Suggested questions to answer in your story if you're writing one: Why did DH marry DW? How do they like Formaggio Estate? Did anything happen on the trip there?)
Here's the second family:
DH and DW are peasants living at Formaggio Estate. They've only been married for a few months. They've lived here their entire life and worked for the Lord Agnolo when he was alive. They're interested to see what the new Lord and Lady will be like.
(Suggested questions: Have DH and DW always been friends, or did they not like each other when they were little? Do they like the new Lord and Lady? What did they think of Lord Agnolo?)

Lorenzo spent seven years amassing a fortune in the markets of Florence and met Vittoria just a year and a half ago in the marketplace. Lorenzo didn't see much in Vittoria at first, but she quickly proved herself a useful merchant's assistant. Six months after they met, they were married! Lorenzo's relatives were surprised that he would marry Vittoria, who had no relatives or money to speak of. Lorenzo is tight-lipped about why he chose Vittoria, but his close friends have noticed a change of attitude for the better since they were married. Vittoria just realized she is pregnant. She and Lorenzo moved to a villa in the country, Formaggio Estate--which used to belong to his grandfather, Lord Agnolo. Agnolo passed away just after Lorenzo and Vittoria's wedding in a freak accident in one of his vineyards. Lorenzo wasn't keen on moving to the country, but Vittoria convinced him that he could run his little merchant empire from the country and that, due to rumors of plague, the fresh air of the country would be better for their new child than the dank, stale air of the city. Upon moving to the Estate, Lorenzo and Vittoria met Lessio and Bella.
Lessio and Bella Loredan have both lived on the Estate since childhood--both born to peasant serfs working on the Estate. They were married a few months ago, after Lord Agnolo's death, but before Lorenzo and Vittoria arrived. Lord Agnolo was a rather sharp man who had a myriad of rules and expectations for his serfs. Lessio and Bella are considered the ones "in the know" because they have worked the longest on the Estate--turnover, vagrancy, and mortality are high there, but they are hopeful that the new Lord and Lady of Formaggio will be better overseers than their previous one.

Francesco was the younger son of his father, and his elder brother was the one to whom all the expectation and responsibility were imparted. He never figured he would have too many duties, and could live his life peacefully off his family's dime doing as he pleased. He enjoyed the city life and society, and though his family members occasionally needled him to look into marrying a girl from a nice family, the pressure was far more on his older brother. When he began spending time with Madalena, many expected he'd take her as a mistress. However, Madalena was devoutly religious and refused to share his bed unless she were his bride. And to everyone's shock, so he did. However, mere months after their marriage, Francesco's elder brother took sick and died, leaving behind a wife but no children. And so it was that Francesco was the family heir. Francesco has already been missing the city life that he loved. Madalena, on the other hand, is glad to be away from a society that shunned her. Here at the estate, no one has known her as anything but their lady.
Dolce and Giotto never noticed each other much as children. Giotto was a friend of Dolce's older brother, and not much interested in spending time with little girls. For her part, she thought her brother's loud and boisterous friend was annoying. Things changed as they became teenagers, though. Giotto was the first to change his mind and begin to think that Dolce was quite interesting indeed. Something of a local beauty, she gained many other admirers, and he had to work hard to gain his attentions. But he was a determined fellow, and good at getting himself heard. Secretly, Dolce favored him more than any of the others before she let it be known, as he had learned to be charming and made it well known how he admired her. But she wanted to be sure he could be committed before she would allow herself to be caught. Inevitably, they came together. Dolce is interested in seeing a fine lady from the city come to the estate, having no idea how close their circumstances once were. Giotto declares that he doubts there will be much difference between one lord and another, but secretly he's just as curious.

Family 1
Alessandro “Sandro” was a merchant in the city. He was fairly wealthy and everyone was surprised when he married a penniless orphan. Catalina “Lina” saved his life when he fell into the river one night while walking the short way back home (he sent his carriage on, wanting to enjoy the air and clear his head. He can’t swim). Lina fell for Sandro’s sense of humor and apparent kind nature when expressing his genuine thanks, which surprised her especially given his obvious fine clothing (she didn’t mind how the fine clothing, now wet, showed off his athletic build either). For his part, Sandro fell for Lina’s unhesitating daring, how she looked at him and spoke to him as if he were a real person and not just some stuck-up nobleman, and her green eyes in the moonlight (he didn’t mind how her now-wet dress clung to her generous curves either). They've been married for about a year now and they're expecting their first child! Recently, Alessandro’s grandfather, Lord Agnolo died and he happened to be next in line to inherit his estate. He was hesitant to pack up and move to the country, but Lina pointed out that plague outbreaks have been frequent in the city and it would be better to raise a family where there is less plague. She convinced him eventually, so they gave the house to Sandro’s sister and her family and moved to Formaggio Estate. On the way to the estate they discussed their child’s potential name. They want them to sound regal, and to contain elements of both of theirs (hence Alessio and Isabetta for Alessandro and Lisabetta) and also a sense of the new adventure they’re embarking (hence Benvenuto “welcome” and Novella “new”).

Renaissance Italy! One of my favourite eras. Oh, wow, this takes me back: the first royal-style congrats I ever played here, years ago, I did a Renaissance Italy duchy instead of a proper kingdom. Ah, nostalgia.

Cosimo Fonte & Belloza Rosso were never meant to get together. One night Cosimo was drunk and Belloza was begging for money on the streets. Cosimo mistaking her as a prostitute paid her. Belloza was very thankful and was shocked once Cosimo started making advances. Knowing Cosimo was a powerful man she went along with it. Cosimo was very upset to learn Belloza was pregnant. Cosimo who was afraid of having an illegitimate child married Belloza. About 3 months into their marriage Belloza lost the child. Cosimo & Belloza had learned to love each other and were both saddened by the news. Belloza wanted a child and Cosimo did too. Belloza became pregnant again and the couple were happy once again. After moving to the Formaggio estate Belloza was starting to regret her decision, while Cosimo loved it Belloza didn't it. It was older than the estate they had currently lived in and much more froggy & cold. Belloza also disliked the estate and the lands surrounding it because on the trip to the estate their coach was stopped and they were robbed. Belloza was afraid for her life but Cosimo was quick with his wits and they managed to get away. Little did they know they were robbed by the peasants who worked at the Formaggio estate.

Lenello Crivelli & Novella de Vigo were never friends growing up. The Crivelli & de Vigo family had always fought for the favor or whatever Lord lived at the estate at the time. Lenello & Novella found themselves starting to like each other during their teen years. They would sneak out of the estate at night and talk. Once they both turned 20 Leonello proposed Novella was flustered but immediately accepted. The Crivelli & de Vigo families disliked each other even more at this point and Novella was disowned by her family. The Crivelli family welcomed her with open arms after learning what the de Vigo family had done. Once Lord Agnolo died Leonello & Novella were ecstatic they assumed they'd let free and snuck out of the estate.

Alessandro's family disowned him when he married Catalina. His grandfather would have, too, but he was dead. News travels slowly when you don't have Internet or phones or cars, so Lord Agnolo didn't know not to leave Formaggio Estate to his grandson.
Alessandro wouldn't gave cared if Lord Agnolo had disowned him because he was in love. He met Catalina on a boat. He was travelling to Spain and Catalina was stowing away. (There had been a particularly nasty outbreak of the plague and she was a germaphobe, so she left. Or I guess she was just scared of the plague because I don't think they knew about germs 600 years ago.) Alessandro found her in the hold. Catalina started apologizing profusely and begoing him not to tell the Captain, but Alessandro didn't answer because he had just fallen in love. He offered to pay for her passage and also take her home as soon as the ship got to Spain. Catalina outright refused at first (plague!) (And strange person!) but Alessandro visited her every day of their voyage, and by the time they arrived in Spain, she was willing to give him a chance, and once they were back in Florence, she loved him more than she hated the plague. She was still overjoyed to move to the country, though.
Paolo was small and shy when he was little. And people were cruel and they picked on him relentlessly, knowing he wouldn't fight back. That all stopped a few years ago, once they were older, but people still shun him, mostly out of habit. Lucia loved a boy named Giulio, and he would have married her, but she fell ill with smallpox. She survived, but her face was all scarred, so Giulio dumped her. He was kind of a jerk. In desperation, and thinking that no one else would marry them, Paolo proposed and Lucia said yes. They don't love each other, though. They're friends. But they wish things were different. They didn't like Lord Agnolo. He was pretty different, usually, but he had an awful temper and lashed out when he was angry. They don't know Alessandro and Catalina very well yet, but they're not distant and they haven't lashed out yet, so they're happy with the change.

Alessandro da Vigo had been the talk of the... not of the town, but certainly of an upper-middle-class, largely mercantile, subsect of it, when he married Caterina Fonte. Outsiders listening in sometimes asked why - was Caterina promiscuous, was she hideous, was she a princess from a foreign land? And the Florentine people would shake their heads and smile and say that no, that was exactly the point. Caterina Fonte was no one at all. An orphan girl without a dowry, raised by nuns in the countryside surrounding the city. But, Alessandro proudly proclaimed, he loved her. He loved her in spite of her poverty and nothing in heaven or earth, he declared, would stop him from marrying her. And nothing did. The couple settled down in Alessandro's city house, and eventually conceived a baby, for whom names have already been chosen. The greatest hiccup has been the passing of Alessandro's grandfather, Lord Agnolo, but even this turned out to be a blessing when Alessandro inherited his estate. He planned to do little with it, simply working it for profit and keeping it as a refuge in case of trouble. However, as Caterina's pregnancy progressed, yet another outbreak of the plague struck the city. She began to worry - what if the baby got sick in the city, killed by the horrors of urban life before their life even really began. Eventually, she convinced Alessandro to move the family out to the estate.

Giulia, Daniele has always said, is too smart for the estate. Well, not always. But for the past three years since they've gotten over their childhood rivalry, he's certainly said it.
This is one of my favourite time periods currently, and I'd have loved to run something like this if I had the time right now! I'm going to be so excited for every update!

Prospero met Tullia by pure chance. On one of his trips back into the city, he grew deathly ill, falling at her feet. Tullia, having lived all her life on the streets, knew some little secrets to nurse him back to full health. From the moment Prospero first awoke from his sickly stupor and saw her face clearly, he fell in love with Tullia.
Tullia never had the prettiest of faces. As skinny as humanly possible without falling ill from malnourishment, her street life hardened her features while softening her heart. She often took in others who appeared in need of aid, having little to offer them herself. What Prospero saw in her, though, superseded physical beauty. Prospero saw the interior beauty of her kindness.
Whereas Prospero knew from that first moment that he loved this woman, Tullia took some convincing. She knew from his clothing who he was and a poor street rat could never marry a rich merchant, no matter how much she thought she might love him. Which she did. Caring for him in his sickness showed her the man in all his strengths and all his weaknesses and she could see how big his heart truly was. She wished she could have him all to herself, but she knew no one could ever except them.
But Prospero pushed and prodded and urged and begged. He serenaded her with a thousand reasons why she should marry him, Tullia responding with a thousand and one reasons why she shouldn't. Prospero could see the pain her rejection caused her own heart, the sparkle he once knew to dance in her eyes dulling with every further rejection. Finally, one day, he pulled out his last resort.
He met with Tullia on the streets in the middle of the city where everyone could see them. He presented her with flowers, a ring tied in the center. "Tullia, you brought life back to my dying corpse," he proclaimed, falling at her feet. "You brought love to my life and joy to my joyless days. You drone on about appearances and how a marriage between us would ruin us both, but I care nought about such things, my dearest. I care only about you. Take my hand, take my ring, take my life, my love, for I want no one else but you."
