These have been the years of plague and nuptials. Four years ago, shortly after squashing Brittany and France’s plot to take control, a plague struck Linesi and took with it King Simon himself, as well as his youngest son Amaury. Thus, Prince Miles has since been crowned King Miles. The Queen (formerly Dowager) worked quickly to set up an engagement for him, and he will soon wed Viscountess Regina Claudia Gallego. Elspeth herself has recently re-married, a controversial decision in the eyes of some courtly figures, given the relatively young King’s sudden death and the affection that they shared (she is not unsympathetic to this view), but one that Miles and his advisors deemed best when they saw how the losses were affecting her, thinking that another male presence would bolster her and allay her melancholy. Practically, as well, Miles knew that with his young Kingship and no heirs of his own yet, he could use the strengthened ties that a marriage would afford from the ally Lukas, Count Amstadter. Their union is not without comfort, that is true, but Elspeth thinks she will never love again, at least not like she did with Simon.
Also to strengthen the Linesi’s position was the engagement of Miles’ elder sister Princess Emma to the Viscount Sandell. Their engagement rushed at the start, the couple nonetheless wasted no time in begetting children once Elspeth had been moved to Bertran’s estate, union formally acknowledged by God or not. Miles was at first irate at the potential scandal so early in his rule, but was relieved when no one cared much, being more invested in picking up the pieces of their lives after the plague than condemning two young people for moving aside the bundling sheets. They are the pleased parents to Elodia (her third name Mathilde honoring Emma’s mother Matilda) and Simon (named, obviously after the late King, her brother), though they have left the sheets in place of late to postpone more children.
Caroline and Henry were a bit surprised to have more children – and another set of twins at that – though Caroline’s flowers had not ended, they had not been fruitful for a while. That was not the case five years ago, however, when they added Richard and Rupert to their family. Their oldest, Hugo, and his wife Celestine welcomed their first child two years ago, a son named Davide Hugo Pasqual.
Beatrice and Robert’s Antony and Sarah were also struck down, leaving only their eldest child Theophania behind. It took two years before they entertained the thought of more children, but decided that the joy they brought was worth the potential grief that could come, and have since had two more Roberta Ester Adela (her first name after her father and third name after her mother’s second name Adeliza) and and the newborn Flora Sidonia Beatrix (her third name also a nod to her mother), though as yet not another son.
Miles’ uncle, Prince Alewyn the knight, was wed to the recently-crowned Italian Queen Violante Covallini, another advantageous marriage. They have produced two daughters, Bianca and Eleanora. Juliet of Thibault, her arrival in Linesi and wedding to Prince William barely a few months old (and unfortunately not yet consummated by the lady’s choice, as William was sure to complain about to anyone who would listen over a cup of ale) also succumbed to the sickness. William has again been matched, this time to a Duchess of Hagen, though he’s not well pleased that his new wife is of a lower status than his former, especially given Alewyn’s impressive match. At least Esme is equally as young and beautiful as Juliet was, a small consolation.
