They decide to Americanize her name to Anastasia and, since they never knew if she had a middle name, give her the middle name Justina, the same as Holly's, to cement her place as a part of their family. Alexia delights in dusting off her Russian to be able to communicate with Stasia, as they've taken to calling her.

The Slaters adopt again, this time a 10-year-old girl from Russia with wavy brown hair and blue eyes. Her name is Maria, and when they ask her if she'd like to have the middle name Louise, a feminization of Bryce's middle name, she smiles brightly and nods enthusiastically. The three youngest girls form a tight bond. They enroll Alexia and Maria in piano lessons together. Maria adores it, but Holly suspects Alexia just goes because Maria does. They've also enrolled Stasia in dance lessons which she takes to quite quickly. Max landed the star role in the school play as well as the school musical, along with in several productions by the local youth theater. He receives an acceptance letter to Julliard's drama department, and while Holly and Bryce sometimes wish he would do something more practical, they support him wholeheartedly. Lydia is accepted into the state's Science and Math boarding school, and though she doesn't know how she'll feel about being away from her family so soon, she decides she has to give it a try, or she'll regret it. So Holly and Bryce end up with a trio of little girls who mainly speak Russian to each other, and sometimes aren't quite sure how that happened. They love them to death, though, and wouldn't change a thing.
