Miran and Tori have been married for twelve years. They and their family moved to the United States six months ago. Miran works for a computer programming company with offices in both Sweden and the US (as well as several other countries). When he was offered a new position at a US based office, he talked it over with Tori. The two of them decided a trans-Atlantic move was something they wanted for their family. Tori had been working for a nursing home as a nurse. While she hasn't yet found time to work on her US nursing credentials (having just had a baby and all), she is keeping plenty busy with the children and helping them adjust to a new culture.
Elissa, 11, did not want to leave Sweden. She loved her friends, school, and neighborhood there. She has had a hard time adjusting to life in the United States. She is in a fifth grade classroom, but is also enrolled in an intensive ESL program after school hours. While she did learn some English in Sweden, it wasn't enough for a successful integration into an American classroom.
Aaron, 10, was upset to leave his friends in Sweden; however, he looks at their move to America as a grand adventure. Aaron is very outgoing and has quickly made new friends. He is in fourth grade and attends the same intensive ESL program after school that Elissa does. He is quickly learning the language and is trying to convince Miran and Tori to let him try out for the soccer team next fall.
Eliah, 7, follows his older brother's lead and sees their move as a great adventure. He is in first grade this year, and did not have any formal schooling prior to this year. He did attend preschool in Sweden, but has quickly made the transition to the American classroom. He is very academically minded and has picked up English very quickly. Often he is the teacher for other members of the family.
Silas, 5, is a quiet little boy who is very musically inclined. He is attending an intensive Kindergarten readiness program this year and enjoys playing the keyboard and recorder. Sometimes, Miran lets him play his willow flute.
Juni, 3, is an energetic girl who always has a lot of energy. She is going to preschool this year in the mornings and goes to a playgroup each afternoon. She speaks a blend of Swedish and English and appears, in general, to be altogether unaffected by the move. She's more worried about the new baby.
Tori was four months pregnant when the family moved to the US. Baby Maia was born just last month, and is the first of the Johanssen clan to be a dual citizen (US and Swedish).
