Four years ago, Anthony's older brother Derek passed away. Derek was a single father, his wife having left him for another man, leaving him to raise their six kids alone. This was a couple years before his death and Derek never dated again. Despite his ex-wife's heart being elsewhere, his was always with her. In order to bring in more money to raise his six beautiful, growing children, Derek had picked up doing odd jobs on the weekend, such as mowing lawns and fixing sheds. He was doing so when he fell, cracking his head open. He died on the spot.
His poor children didn't know for awhile. He had been gone for several hours, too long for him to be working on the job still, so the eldest, twelve year old Tristan, called the client. They went out to check on their father and found him dead. This took quite the toll on the poor Thurman children. Tristan had to try to be strong for his five younger siblings, but it wasn't easy. Olivia, ten, broke down. She had already had anxiety issues from when her mother left, but this threw her deeper into this anxiety. Shelby, eight, was caught up trying to calm Olivia, leaving Tristan with the three younger children. Micah, six, and the twins, Byron and Barry, four, were terribly affected.
With the untimely death of Derek and their mother's unwillingness to take them back, wanting to leave them entirely for her new life, Anthony and Cate decided to step in. Anthony made a fair amount of money, enough for their small family with plenty left to care for six more children. Cate also helped bring in some income as a fairly successful arts and crafts seller in the online community. So they spoke with the legal consultants and they were given custody of their six nephews and nieces.
That same year, Cate gave birth to their third child--a son they chose to name after Anthony's deceased brother, as it had been a couple months since his passing that their child was born. Derek Stuart Brady, now four, is just about the spitting image of his deceased uncle, in looks and personality. It amazes Anthony just how much his son is like his brother despite the boy never having met his uncle.
Just recently, they welcomed their fourth child, Cedric Christopher Dean. Olivia, now fourteen, has started helping out around the house more and more, especially with the littlest ones. It helps her keep her mind off her troubles. Especially baby Cedric. Mostly baby Cedric, actually. She almost refuses to play with Derek, claiming it too painful a reminder of her father, with whom she had been close. Shelby, now twelve, on the other hand, loves playing with the rambunctious four-year-old. She finds it helpful in dealing with the grief of her father's passing.
Micah, Byron, Barry, and Spencer have all become fast friends--Micah the oldest at ten, Spencer the middle at nine, and Barry and Byron the youngest at eight. Micah and Spencer are in the same class at school, Micah having been held back due to physical illness caused by grief. Byron and Barry still don't quite understanding everything that happened. They were only two when their mother left and four when their father died. All of Derek's children have been seeing a counselor regularly since his passing, and all of them suffer from some form of anxiety or depression to varying extents.
Within the past couple of months, Tristan, sixteen, has started dating someone no one saw coming. Ever since he has become a part of Anthony and Cate's family, he has gone to all the family gatherings on Cate's side of the family as well, where he became close friends with Cate's brother Jared's daughter, Kelley. They started talking on a regular basis and began dating just a couple months ago. Of course, Tristan took the courteous route and asked permission from his Aunt Cate to date her niece. Truthfully, Cate finds it a little odd that her nephew on her husband's side is dating her niece on her side, but she thinks that they make a beautiful couple. Besides, Kelley's mom passed away when she was ten, so she was able to empathize with Tristan, and Cate thinks that makes their relationship all the stronger.
