Please welcome Mikkel Nikolai (15) and Oscar Jonathan (9)!
Mikkel and Oscar are brothers born in Denmark. Their father and mother were convicted of robbery when Mikkel was 11 and Jonathan was 5, at which time they were put into the care of their maternal grandfather in Sweden. They have been with us since their grandfather's death one year ago. Mikkel recently revealed to us that their grandfather had been abusing both of them for the duration of their stay with him.
Mikkel is a talented boy who enjoys playing the cello, which he has done from an early age. He has trouble interacting with other children his age and is sometimes aggressive toward them. He meets with a psychologist weekly, and he has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Since being in therapy he has become significantly calmer and more in control of his aggression, so we strongly recommend that he continue therapy when he is in your care.
Oscar is a quiet child. Like his brother, Oscar has PTSD. He is often depressed and has a history of self-injury, though his demeanor seems to have improved in the year that he has been here. Since being with us he has picked up the guitar, and he is the most happy when he is playing it.
Please let us know how Mikkel and Oscar are doing!

It's been two years since Mikkel and Oscar joined our family.
It has been a really hard time for all of us. The change was initially a lot harder on Mickey and Ozzy (they called each other that, we went along with it) than we had expected. Ozzy seemed to be very afraid all the time. He would hide all around the house and he didn't say a word to anyone for the first three weeks.
Mickey pretty much broke all the statues and vases we had in his first 4 days here. He hit Stef repeatedly, he screamed at us and even tried setting the house on fire.
Stef kept asking us if we could "give them back". Our explanation that they were his brothers now, didn't seem to satisfy him. Fabian never spent so much time at his grandparents' place, helping our neighbour with chores, playing at his friends' house and anything else he could think of to not be home.
Even we thought sometimes that maybe we had bitten off than we could chew with the adoption...
After about a month and a half, some sort of shaky peace settled in the house. Mickey discovered our little studio area and spent a good deal of time recording himself playing the cello. Two weeks later he allowed me to play the piano with him. It was one of the happiest moment I've had with him. He really felt like my son after that. He was still aggressive though. Even his therapist was surprised that he really didn't seem to be improving like he had before he moved in with us.
Ozzy became a little more communicative with me and Detlef. He still didn't like speaking with the other kids at all. He never even said one word more than absolutely necessary to Mickey. He enjoys playing the guitar, like he did before, only he gets very angry whenever Fabian plays.
