Edmund Henry Button, more commonly known as Eddy by his mother and friends grew up in New York, USA, where he lived with his single mother. Although Eddy lacked a father figure in his life he idolised his mother who worked her fingers to the bone to provide for Eddy and his little sister. Eddy left school at sixteen without prospects to go onto college, instead he got himself a job and worked as hard as his mother to make sure his sister got to go on the school trips that he'd had to miss out on. After two years of working tirelessly Eddy was prompted by his sister and mother to join an internet dating site because his work had meant that he hadn't been able to have much of a social life. Meanwhile in a small city in South Africa, Lucia Bennett Hutter was growing up in one of the poorest white communities in her city, and the whole of South Africa. Her father left shortly before her thirteenth birthday, and since then Lucia has been left to cope with her four younger siblings - the youngest of which is called a bastard in society for her mother's carelessness. Lucia may not have had the best start in life but she worked hard from thirteen years of age to make sure her three sisters and brother got a better education than she did herself. On Wednesdays however when she got her afternoon off work, in between leaving work and going home to start the chores, Lucia secretly went into an internet cafe in the centre of town where she checked on her profile on an internet dating site she'd been registered to since she was 18. One day, as usual, she went to the cafe expecting to see nothing in particular, instead Lucia sees a message from a man in America.
The rest is history, if you'd like. Eddy and Lucia talked for several months over the internet until Eddy gathered the money to fly out to Africa to meet Lucia in person. 18months later the pair were married, and although Eddy desperately wanted to go back to the US, Lucia was adament that she would not abandon her siblings, and so Eddy got a job and together they bought a small house on the outskirts of the city Lucia grew up in.
