SO1: Thomas Jeremy Gatins
Thomas grew up in Toronto, Canada, with his grandfather, Vincent, a veterinarian, and his grandmother, Lorna, a retired teacher. They raised him and his two older sisters, Carly and Heather, after their parents died in a car accident when he was three.
SO2: Ruth Calpurnia Washington
Ruth grew up in Kenya with her grandparents, Horace and Frances, who were Christian missionaries. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father was never a part of her life.
Ruth and Thomas met in Toronto where she had moved to attend school. He was managing a coffee shop where she was employed. They were friends for six months before they began dating. A year later, Thomas proposed and they were married, at which point they moved in together. She graduated with a law degree and began practicing. Ruth and Tom were active in their church and after having three sons of their own, went on to adopt five daughters from Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
