The marriage of Christopher's sister Helena to a foreign count, Count Otto of the neighboring kingdom of Sundun, was a popular move. Not only were they obviously greatly in love--and Ardians love a good love story--but it was a very strategic political alliance as well. The count of Sundun is a powerful ally, an uncle and protector of the boy-king Josef of Sundan, loyal to his nephew and to keeping peace between the two sometimes-rivals. Not long after, Elizabeth gave birth to another daughter. The populace was simply happy at another healthy birth, and so was the entire family including Mirabelle, usually called Mira. The council, however, worries a little at this trend of daughters and worry that the young queen might be unable to conceive a son. Christopher didn't even think of that in joy over his little daughter. He and Elizabeth named her Rosalia, after a queen of Ardia from centuries past, the last inheriting queen of Ardia. Elizabeth and Christopher chose it because of its beauty as well as a subtle hint to the council that they should not worry about a family of girls, as they can be capable of ruling as well. The child's other names honor Elizabeth, the dowager queen and Christopher, Elizabeth's grandmother, and Christopher's sister Charlotte. Mira at once gave the baby her nickname of Rose. The two sisters look a great deal alike, both resembling Elizabeth with dark hair and blue-green eyes, though with slightly fairer skin and a healthy dose of their father's features as well.
With Rose's birth and Helena's marriage both having public opinion of the royal family at a peak, Christopher and Elizabeth discussed it and have decided to make a bold move. Three members of the council having decided to step down, Christopher has decided to appoint three women in their place. This is the first time in four centuries that women have sat on the council, and it is a move that they know will cause controversy. However, Christopher has grown increasingly certain, especially after the birth of his own daughters, that women should no longer be subordinate to men. His extremely intelligent wife and sisters and mother, the examples of powerful women rulers in his own kingdom's past, and his own determination that his daughters should never be told they are less than anyone has made him determined to make women equal citizens in his lifetime. The beginning is the women councilors. All are noblewomen, university educated, and two of them spent years as scholars before entering the public sphere. All were popular with the people and among the shrewdest people Christopher knows. The reaction has been mixed--most women are vocally approving, some men are vocally disapproving, but the majority see this as just the king's whim, nothing to worry about yet. The male councilors have not yet been openly hostile to the new appointees, as they still have the majority they think they can keep a check on the power of these women. Most of them also see this as Christopher's whim, the result of his own expectations for his daughters. Two, however, Lord Rolf and Lord Thierry, are certain that this is Queen Elizabeth's doing. They see her as a threat to the benefits they have long enjoyed as men, and fear that herinfluence may lead to more drastic changes. She is certainly given an unprecedented amount of power for a queen, and they know Christopher considers her his partner rather than his assistant. Elizabeth, through a network of informants she and Christopher set up, knows full well what they think but is waiting to tell Christopher. No need to set him against them, she thinks, until they do more than grumble. She has, however, discussed it with Dowager Queen Gabrielle and her own mother, and at their advice has taken to keeping her daughters with her at almost all times and appointing a new Royal Nursemaid, a woman she is certain is absolutely loyal to her who will report to her anything she feels may be threatening to the princesses. Christopher was surprised at her caution, but asked no questions as he accepts that she would not do it if she didn't have a reason. He does not push her to share her worries, knowing that in time she will. Mira is delighted with spending more time with her mother and loves the new nursemaid, whom she calls Mimi (short for Amelia). In her toddler logic, the increase in mama-time and Mimi are both because of Rose, which is a conclusion everyone is willing to let her have.
