Christopher has known for the last eight years that he would one day inherit the throne. Though the youngest of six children, he had only one older brother, and in Ardia men have inherited time out of mind whenever there was a male heir to be had. When his brother, Prince Walter Michael George Andrew James, was eighteen, he officially abdicated the throne in order to dedicate his life to study as a scholar at the Royal University. Life Scholars at the university are required to renounce all claims to inheritance so they could better dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge. As a child he prospect of ruling excited Christopher, and as a teenager it terrified him. Christopher's father had died when he was only six, and he knew that he would have to take the throne as soon as he came of age. His mother, the beloved Queen Gabrielle, had ruled as regent since then, actually leading Ardia longer than his father had. She had done rather an excellent job of it, in Christopher's opinion, and her competant leadership has led Christopher to question the long-held opinions that women should not inherit the throne. Women are generally subordinate to men in Ardian society; though allowed to hold property and equally educated, women are barred from many aspects of society and a wife is always subordinate to her husband. Christopher, probably thanks to his wise and powerful mother as well as his four equally competant sisters, is beginning to wonder why that is, especially since it has not always been that way.
Christopher was trained since childhood to rule, and had been gradually taking over duties from his mother so he could get used to kingship. Ardia is a sizeable and diverse kingdom, occupying a peninsula in the Southern Ocean. It has rich soil for agriculture, pasture lands for hearding, thriving cities, and plenty of rivers and waterways to make trade easy. Ardians are generally a brave and proud but warm-hearted and fun-loving people. The king of Ardia holds a great deal of power, but it is not absolute, with the Council of Twelve (one for each of Ardia's twelve provinces) able to check several aspects of his power with an adequate vote. Ardia is generally a bustling, prosperous kingdom with a rather high level of importance in its area of the world. Christopher has inherited a rather stable kingdom, much to his and everyone else's relief. Soon after his coronation, Christopher married the girl he had been engaged to for two years, a beautiful young noblewoman from the south he had met on an excursion to its famous seaside towns. Elizabeth is a brilliant, kind, and well-educated young woman with an elevated mind and a gift for diplomacy. The two fell in love and a match was quickly arranged, as young Elizabeth was seen as an ideal candidate for queen: intelligent, loyal, popular, and shrewd. It didn't hurt that she also has the dramatic sort of beauty the southerners are known for: thick masses of dark hair, olive skin, and blue-green eyes almost the color of the ocean. Her looks balance well with the fair skin, auburn hair, and brown eyes of the young king, and the importance of the symbolism of uniting all of Ardia could not be underestimated. Christopher and his entire family are overjoyed that hsi love match was also politically advantageous enough for marriage, and everyone is sure the two will be very happy.
