Evgeni and Liza Sokolov are Russian emigrants to the United States. They arrived in the country just a few weeks ago after spending several months getting to the "promised land". Evgeni and Liza made the decision to come to the new country to seek greater opportunities for themselves. They entered the United States and have settled in New York City, for now. Liza misses the open land and wants to move somewhere less crowded, but until they save up some money, they're stuck. Liza works six days a week in a laundry where one of the other tenants in their building recommended her to work. Evgeni works as a laborer at a steel mill. Both Evgeni and Liza are very busy and rarely get time to themselves; however, they are determined to make a life for themselves in their new homeland.

Evgeni and Liza had not been in the US long when they found out that they were expecting their first child. Liza immediately wished for the companionship of her older sister and female friends, while Evgeni missed the advice from his father and uncles that he would have received. When Liza was about six months pregnant, the two of them received a letter from Liza's older sister, Margarita, informing them that one of Liza's close childhood friends had gotten married. When the time came for the baby to be born, Evgeni found a Russian midwife that would deliver their baby in exchange for some basic repair work on her small home. Evgeni and Liza were delighted to welcome baby Klara Yekaterina Sokolov into the family. Klara is named after both Evgeni and Liza's mothers, Klara and Yekaterina. The two of them felt that somehow, their ancestry should be reflected in the United States. Now that Klara has entered the world, Liza longs even more for open space where Klara can run and play when she is older. Evgeni has promised that he will do his best to give Liza what she wants.
