Oskar and Ingrid have settled nicely in their new home in rural Minnesota. Oskar is now the very proud owner of a tiny farm. His uncle Nils has a farm not far away and both Oskar and Ingrid are grateful that he's been there to help them both with the language and the purchase of land. Ingrid was excited when she realised that she was pregnant but a letter from Sweden made her very homesick. Two of her younger sisters annouced that they were getting married and it made her sad that she would miss so many important happenings in her family's life now. And they would miss hers. Oskar also felt homesick. He had been close to Ingrid's family and he missed having family around to talk to. He missed all the familiar things in Sweden he left behind. He also struggled with the language and parts of him wanted to go back home, just for a short period of time. But they couldn't afford it and he was afraid the trip would be too much for his pregnant wife.
The couple forgot all about being homesick when their son was born in early August. They really felt like a family and the realisation that their son would grow up to call America home made them feel less alienated. Both Ingrid and Oskar agreed on naming their son after their fathers. Karl is after Oskar's father and Johan is after Ingrid's. He goes by both names.
