The Brandt Family

SiânThe Brandt Family:DH: Sebastian Eric Brandt
DW: Luca Kai (Siskin) Brandt
DS: Jonah Milo BrandtSebastian knew Luca wanted a baby. It was in the way she held her nieces and nephews and in the way that she admired other people’s children in shopping malls and on the covers of tabloid magazines while waiting at the checkout. When they passed Kids R Us and Baby Gap, her eyes always lingered just a little too long to be considered “glancing.” Still, Luca said nothing so Sebastian said nothing.Years went by that way until one day Luca was at a family gathering, holding her cousin’s infant daughter and Sebastian found himself leaning over to her, saying softly, “You’d make a great mom.” “Sebastian, don’t,” Luca replied as the smile seemed to slip off her face. “Please don’t.” Sebastian was caught off guard. He thought it would be easier than that. He waited another two days before approaching the subject again, this time when they were home alone. “Do you think we’d make good parents?” he asked. There was another celebrity baby on the cover of the People magazine in Luca’s hands. Luca looked up from the magazine with a look more sad than Sebastian had been prepared for. “I can’t have a baby, Sebastian. It doesn’t work that way,” she replied, her voice was tense. Sebastian sat down on the loveseat a little more closely than he had to and put his arm around her middle. “I didn’t say anything about that. I said, ’Do you think we’d be good parents?’” Luca closed the magazine and left it in her lap. “I’d like to be,“ she admitted. ***** Somehow the topic grew abandoned again and wasn’t brought up for at least another month when Sebastian came home from work and found Luca arriving home at the same time. Sebastian was home a little earlier than usual and Luca looked startled to see him. Then Sebastian spotted the box in the passenger seat. “A baby mobile?” he asked. Luca flushed. “It’s nothing. It was just too perfect to pass up. It has little birds on it,” she rambled, “The store had a whole room set, but I didn’t want to go overboard. But I thought a mobile wasn’t too much. Just for, you know, one day, if we decide for sure to-” she trailed off. Sebastian opened the door and picked up the box to better view the mobile. “Wow,” he noted blithely, “Now we have an even harder task- not just finding a baby to adopt, but finding a baby that likes birds!” Luca laughed, but in her laugh was a bit of a happy sob. The couple were looking up adoption options by that evening.***** The pair brought Jonah Milo Brandt home just over a year later. It took Sebastian a while to adjust to less sleep and handling a tiny human on a daily basis, but Luca fell into the role like she was born to do it. Sebastian maintains she is the only mother that ever wakes up to a crying baby with a smile on her face. For his part, Jonah seems to be a happy baby. He’s healthy and growing steadily. He laughs and smiles and learns and never seems to stop amazing his parents. Luca can’t imagine why she ever thought she’d go through life without being a mother. Jonah is her pride and joy and she’s ecstatic about the life their little family has ahead of them.Pics:Sebastian
