Years went by after Lily's birth, and the kingdom maintained peace. Bran, though he has been able to move on from Susanna's death and get on with his life, has realized he will never love Judith. Though she has courtly manners and beauty and intelligence, she is also selfish and prone to fits of temper. She also drinks and gambles far too much for his tastes, and spends great deals of money. The people have given her the nickname Queen Coin for her spendthrift ways. Also, she does not like his children. This above all is what truly makes her so unloveable to him. She quite literally cares nothing for her stepchildren or even for her own. Bran continued his monthly visits, which four years after Lily produced a son, whom Bran named Thaddues. As with Lily, Judith showed no interest in the baby, though he was beautiful and looksed a great deal like her. She gave him over to the care of Bran and his family, and again Quinn, Rose, Walter, and Alexandra vowed to never let Judith turn him like her. They took more of a hand in raising of all younger siblings than Judith did. She came and looked over Lily and Thaddeus once every few days, but otherwise left them to Bran and the children and Susanna's family. Lily and Thaddeus have listened since birth to their father and oldest siblings and Susanna's family refer to "your poor mother" in an offhand way, hardly realizing that they were including Lily and Thaddeus in this as well. They call Susanna's family "Grandmother," "Aunt," and "Uncle." This arrangement has had some odd consequences, such as Lily having the idea that she has two mothers and Judith often having to remind herself that Lily and Thaddeus are not technically included in the category "my stepchildren." Relations between Quinn and Judith have matured into outright loathing. As the one who remembers the most about Susanna, Quinn sees Judith as an insult to her memory. Though he is old enough to uncerstand that his father would have moved on eventually, he hates Judith and her father for forcing his father into marriage. But he fiercely loves Lily and Thaddeus, as he does all his siblings. Bran watches all his children with pride and love and has begun grooming Katarina to take the throne. Though the advisors argue abotu which of the girls, Julianna or Katarina, is truly the heir, Bran and the others have settled on Katarina, mostly because she looks heartbreakingly like her mother. All of the triplets are very sweet and loving children, quite affectionate. Julianna overcame her traumatic birth and is a healthy and active little girl, but unfortunately Gideon and Katarina have not. Both are frail, suseptible to illness, and easily tired. Bran, on the advice of the physicians, has ordered a wholesome diet and twice-weekly exercise days for the two of them, especially Katarina, as the laws of Irnys state that a ruler must fill a certain standard of physical health and, if a woman, must be in good enough health that the physicians have no qualms about her bearing children. No one is sure if that will happen.
Recently another royal child was born, another daughter. Judith, worrying about the increasing closeness of the births, has banned Bran from her bed, which he sees as only to the good. He christened his youngest daughter Sophia, glad she will be his last. She is a sweet and bubbly baby, and all her siblings love her.
