A couple of months after Emeline's passing the people of Rossinest were beginning to get rather anxious that no one had formally been crowned to replace her. They all loved King Jacques-Leon of course, but they new full well that with Emeline gone, he had no right to the throne. To make matters worse another letter arrived for Jacques from his brother, warning him that their father was planning one last charge against Rossinest before he died, and at the old age King Francois was, Jacques knew that his father wouldn't wait. Jacques felt terrible for admitting that he couldn't wait for news from Delacroix that his father had finally left this earth as it would make life so much simplier when that happened. Jacques knew that upon Francois's death, Jean would become King, and finally Rossinest & Delacroix would be at peace and the two brothers who had once been the best of friends would see each other again at last, and get to meet the nieces and nephews that had been stolen from them.
Jacques, after much deliberation, finally agreed to the plan put in place by the advisers - he would marry Princess Rosalinda in order to stay on the throne of Rossinest. He felt sick about it, but he had to ask himself 'what would Emeline have done?', and he knew that she would have done whatever necessary for the people of Rossinest. And so the plan was put into motion and one by one all of the seven princes renounced their claims to the throne. The people were confused as they had been sure that one of the princes would become king, but then they realised that that made Princess Rosalinda heir, and they were not suprised at all when the next announcement from the palace was a bethrothal between the future Queen, and the current King. Rossinest breathed a collective sigh of relief that the royal family & advisers had found away to keep Jacques on the throne and they felt safe once more.
Rosalind and Jacques were married only 7 weeks after Emeline's death, and Rosalind's official coronation as Queen happened the very next day. Everyone was reasonalby pleased with the outcome from a political standpoint, and Rosalinda had not shown any real interest in being an active participant in the decision making, so Jacques was able to carry on as he and Emeline once had without interference. Rosalind enjoyed the social power that being Queen enabled her and spent her time ruling at court with her friends. The only person who was truly upset by this new arrangement was Prince Gaspard who found it rather sickening that his new step-mother was also his cousin, and also that she held no true interest in the governing of Rossinest infuriated him and made him long to have his mother back more than ever.
Time passed and Jacques continued to rule Rossinest undisturbed by his young bride. The advisers pressed for an heir and as time went by with no pregnancy they began to wonder if perhaps the new Queen was barren, and the consequences this could have. In truth, there could be no child as Jacques had never shared Rosalinda's bed and found the idea of doing so repellant. Instead he spent his nights alone in his bed with own company and thoughts of his beloved Emeline in his head... but that was never going to be able to last forever. Two and a half years after their wedding and still no heir, the advisers were beginning to wonder if a divorce and remarriage would be necessary, perhaps in a years time when Rosalinda's sister, Carlota, entered the age of consent... Jacques knew that he must impregnate Rosalinda, and soon.
He visited her chambers that very night after drinking far too much wine and finally deflowered his wife to whom he'd been married so long... and he continued to visit in an drunken state every night until such time as Rosalinda showed symptoms of pregnancy. He was relieved when it was confirmed as it meant he could stop for now, and his heart rejoiced for every time he found pleasure with Rosalinda his soul would weep because what he shared with her was so much less than he'd had with Emeline.
Months passed and Rosalinda's pregnancy was easier than any Emeline had ever had. Even the birth was easy and a single baby girl was born. The advisers felt immediately that a weight had been lifted now that the triplets were no longer the first in line for the throne, and all of Rossinest rejoiced at Princess Adeline's birth. Now they can concentrate on what is really important - killing King Francois.
