When the twins were born, Elinor named the daughter after the dowager queen in hopes that she would be pleased and maybe not so cold to her, but it did not seem to help much. The queen was clearly displeased that Princess Matilda took after Queen Elinor's darker skin coloring. Elinor assured the kings' advisors that the line in succession could not be in doubt because when Princess Matilda was a bit older, she would send her to the Isle of Flowers to learn the ways of her people. Inheritance on the island passed through the female, so Matilda would inherit the family's land rule over the island.Still, they were not entirely satisfied and relieved when the queen gave birth to a single child, Princess Alice. The pregnancy was hard of the queen though, and despite taking precautions, the queen became pregnant once more and died giving birth to the triplets, the last two of which were removed by caesarian section after she died.King Adrian was devastated as the lost of his beloved wife and so was Queen Elinor's family. Only the old dowager queen seemed glad because it meant that King Adrian could remarry and possibly prevent a war with the neighboring kingdom through the marriage alliance and civil war that could result by the triplets' birth. The king sends the twins, Princess Matilda and Prince Alexis, along with their younger sister Princess Alice back to the Isle of Flowers to live with their family. The queen's brother, Basil, remains at the court though to see to the continued training of his nephew Prince Caspar, who a strong young boy and quite able with the sword. He is by far King Adrian's favorite though he loves his other children as well and ached to send them away, but he believed it best for them. King Adrian has difficult bonding with the triplet children, but he knows there is a good chance that one of them will rule the kingdom someday, so to his credit he tries. He comes into the nursery and looks at the sleeping children. Robert, the strongest of the triplets is fast asleep. Little Anthony shakes his tiny fists and fusses as he sleeps. Surely nightmares don't plague someone so young? the king ponders. But the little girl with a tuft of hair as red as the mother whose middle name she was given is wide awake. Her baby blue eyes looking up at her father.Gaia has not had a female queen inherit the throne in six generations though by the law of succession make it possible. Still, after six male reigning kings, would the kingdom accept a queen ruling in her own name? Prince Anthony would probably be the better choice since both children were born last, the male would be safer one to pick for a kingdom accustomed to male rulers.Still, he picks up the little girl in his arms. "Would you like to be queen someday, my sweet daughter? You don't know what that is, but you will someday, and I will try to make you understand that it's too dangerous. Look what happened to your poor mother. I never should have taken her to be my wife. When you're older, I'll send you to the lovely island where her family is and your brother and sisters already are. You won't need to worry about any of this. I'll protect you from it. Now sleep, sweet child, sleep."He places her gently back into the crib. Her eyes flutter, and she finally goes to sleep.
