Re: Year Game
DH: Jakob Autenberg
hair: black, straight
eyes: blue
occupation: chefDW: Katharina
hair: red, wavy
eyes: green
occupation: accountantLocation: Germany Background: Katharina has just moved to Munich, having recently accepted a position at a nationally recognized accounting firm. On her first day, she meets Helena, the firm’s bubbly, young secretary. Helena invites Katharina to a cooking demonstration at one of Munich’s popular new restaurants in order to welcome her to the city. The cooking demonstration – “French Cuisine Made Easy” – is run by the dashing head chef Jakob Autenberg. Jakob spends a lot of time at Katharina and Helena’s cooking station, because Katharina turns out to be a rather helpless cook. However, Jakob admires her sense of humor even though she does blacken the filet mignon. After the demonstration, Katharina and Helena stay to help clean up, and Jakob brews coffee and offers them slivers of Bundt cake. Over coffee and cake, the trio discuss their lives and slide into friendship. Helena leaves shortly thereafter – she has a dog at home that needs his evening walk – but Katharina and Jakob talk long into the night. They agree to meet twice weekly for dinner and coffee, and Jakob proposes after a mere four months of dating. The couple marries at Christmastime, with Helena as the maid of honor.Year 1: Katharina did not expect a positive pregnancy test after six weeks of marriage. But Katharina has conceived a honeymoon baby, and Jakob cannot be happier. He joyfully prepares nutritious meals that cater to her eccentric cravings. She wants ginger one day, garlic the next; pasta with pickles on Tuesdays, pine nuts with egg salad on Fridays. On September 12th, Katharina gives birth to Nicolas Emil, who weighs in at 9 pounds, 4 ounces. Jakob’s meals have surely contributed to the buxom baby’s generous proportions; but Jakob has contributed to more than the baby’s size – the baby has also inherited Jakob’s looks. Jakob and Katharina personally ask Helena to be Nicolas’ godmother, and she happily accepts.Year 2: Jakob receives awful news that his younger brother has died. Jakob’s brother was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that encumbered his digestion and ability to breathe. His brother had always been a scrawny child, and so Jakob learned to cook in order to tempt his appetite. His brother’s name was Nicolas, the same name that Jakob gave to his firstborn son.Year 3: Jakob has been depressed since his brother’s funeral, but Katharina has just given him the first good news in two months – she’s pregnant again! And the good news is doubled when she discovers that she has conceived fraternal twins! On July 31st, at 36 weeks gestation, Noah Simon and Adrian Pascal are born by caesarean section. Despite being fraternal, Noah and Adrian are similarly bedecked with grey eyes and their father’s black hair. The babies are so healthy that they spend no time in the NICU. Helena is asked to become the godparent of these boys, too.Year 4: The Autenberg’s neighbors die in a car crash, leaving their young daughters orphaned. Because the neighbors had no relatives living in Germany, they arranged for the Autenbergs to become the guardians of their children in the event of their deaths. Katharina and Jakob willingly welcome 6-year old Julia and 5-year old Marie into their home. The girls are understandably heartbroken, but gradually adjust to life with the Autenbergs.Year 5: Jakob’s mother loans her son a large sum of money so that he can open his own restaurant. Although Katharina keeps her accounting job, she oversees many of the restaurant’s business elements, allowing it to thrive financially. Katharina invites Helena to join the restaurant staff as its manager; she’s thrilled with the offer and readily accepts. Year 6: Thank goodness Jakob’s restaurant is thriving, because he needs all the money he can get – Katharina is expecting again! On November 18th, she gives birth to the couple’s fourth son, Andreas Leo. Andreas is a hefty baby, weighing in at 9 pounds, 2 ounces at birth. Andreas shares his father and brothers’ characteristic black hair, and he, too, has grey eyes. Helena becomes a godmother for the fourth time. Year 7: As the children grow and the family expands, the Autenberg home seems more and more cramped. Thanks to overcrowding and the restaurant’s financial success, the family decides to move to a large home in the suburbs. Year 8: Bonjour! The family travels to France with two goals in mind: a relaxing vacation, and the opportunity to see Julia and Marie’s only living relatives. The sisters have a great-aunt who lives in Paris, and she has not seen the children since their toddlerhood. Although the initial meeting is awkward, Julia and Marie grow to enjoy their aunt’s company. Overall, the visit and vacation are highly successful. Year 9: Buongiorno! After the success of last year’s vacation, the Autenbergs decide to travel again. This time, they fly to Italy for a two week tour of the country’s cities and countryside. The family invites the girls’ great-aunt to come along, and she willingly obliges. Year 10: A kitchen fire leave Jakob’s forearms and chest badly burned. He’ll recover eventually, but he retires from cooking nevertheless. Although he’ll continue to own his restaurant, he doesn’t want to risk further injury or - heaven forbid - death. DH: Jakob (38)
DW: Katharina (38)
DS: Nicholas (9); DS/DS: Noah and Adrian (7); DS: Andreas (4)
Guardianship of: Julia (12); Marie (11)
