Years flew by, and in time the Medici children grew up. In a while, Vanozza had entered marrying age, and a suitor is soon searched for. Vanozza has always been very beautiful, not unlike her mother, so a lack of suitors was never a problem; the problem was finding one which she would settle with! Vanozza, while pretty, was also picky, and would not settle for any husband. She feared that a rash match would result in a life of misery, and she would rather avoid all such things. She wanted her husband to be handsome, rich, and to treat her well. Romolo and Lucrezia felt almost tickled at her insistence of nitpicking her potential fiances, but they were also worried that she'll end up marrying no-one.
However, with the passing of time, Vanozza found a suitor she found "tolerable": a certain Fabrizio Sforza, hailing from the wetlands near where Romolo used to live before he came to Urbino. Fabrizio filled most of Vanozza's criteria: he was good-looking, he had a moderately large sum of money, and he was too shy to be able to ever do any violence towards his household. But it was not that that made Vanozza settle for him: his shy manners actually charmed her, more than the most valiant of gentlemen, and she was almost instantly smitten. Their marriage was made official, and in a few months the two were wedded. The wedding feast was massive and very bright, courtesy of Vanozza's parents, and the cheer did not die soon.
A few weeks after Vanozza's marriage to Fabrizio, Perotto came to his parents with some news: he thought he had fallen in love, and had actually kept his feelings secret for a year. Now, he thinks his girl is reciprocating, and he wanted to ask for his parents' blessing. Romolo and Lucrezia were willing, but they first wished to see Perotto's chosen consort. To their surprise, it was the daughter of one of Romolo's guards, a young girl named Maria da Tavullia. The girl had no noble blood in her at all, her mother was dead, and she lived alone with her father and brother. Romolo was at first a bit hesitant in his son's choice - he reminded Perotto that when he would inherit the duchy, Maria would have to be his consort, and the people would have to really like her for it to work. But Perotto was insistent. He was sure, and thus their engagement was made official.
