DH: Alton Jerome
Hair: Red, straight
Eyes: Blue
Job: Actor
DW: Julia Vianne
Hair: Brown, curly
Eyes: Blue
Job: Writer
Year One: Alton and I moved to England after college and marriage. He acts in the theater and had gotten a part in a West End production of Les Miserables. I got a job in a publishing company doing editing work, which allowed me to spend much of my time at home and gave me time to work on my own writing career. The time at home also came as a real blessing when I discovered that I was pregnant! Our daughter was born shortly before our first anniversary, a beautiful girl with her father’s bright red hair and my bright blue eyes and freckles. We named her Lily Cathleen, after our mothers. Both of our families came from the States to be there for her birth and first week, and we settled into our new roles as parents eagerly.
Year Two: The novel I had been working on for several years was finally done, and after submitting it to more publishers than I cared to think of, it was finally picked up. It was such a proud moment to finally fulfill the dream I’d had since I was little. I was able to give up my job editing, and moving from editor to writer was such a thrill. I loved being able to be home with Lily almost all of the time, and when I had to do a bit of publicity or business, I can always count on Alton to take Lily to work with him; the actors playing young Cosette and Gavroche both adore her!
Year Three: During a brief publicity tour in New York for my book, my mother called me to tell me my maternal grandmother Samantha had died. It was a real blow, as she had been close to all of us, but it was not a surprise as she had been fighting a long battle with ill health. Alton flew over at once with Lily to attend the funeral, and a week later when her will was read I was informed that she had left me and my family a thousand dollars, as well as some small personal items. We decided to put the money in an account for Lily as the beginning of a college fund.
Year Four: This year we were informed that my younger sister Lucy had contracted meningitis. She was treated successfully, but it was a great scare for all of us, especially her husband Jack and son Paul. She was in the hospital for several weeks, and once the doctors could assure us she wasn’t contagious, we all went to visit her.
Year Five: My grandmother’s death and our scare with my sister led Alton and me to decide to make the move back to the States. We both wanted to spend more time with our families, and we bought a beautiful house half an hour outside New York City. Lily has just started pre-K and loves her school. She has already made many friends, and Alton has gotten a part in a Broadway play. We are all very happy with our move, as are our families.
Year Six: My husband and I had decided to try for another baby, and we were surprised with two! Samantha Margaret, named for my grandmother, and Joseph Wyatt, named for our fathers, arrived a few weeks early but were perfectly healthy. Both have my hair, but Samantha has my eyes while Joseph has my husband’s. Lily was extremely excited with her new brother and sister and couldn’t wait to tell her kindergarten class all about them. I brought them into meet them all when they were a few months old and was quite impressed with how well the class reacted to them.
Year Seven: After begging and begging by Lily, we got her a rabbit for her sixth birthday. It is a sweet-tempered black-and-white female we named Oreo, and she loves her.
Year Eight: Another pet joined our family this year, as we adopted a black Labrador-mix puppy we named Daisy. Daisy is an energetic puppy the kids all adore, especially Samantha, who Daisy loves to play with. We all love our new puppy, especially once she was house-trained!
Year Nine: Another novel of mine was published this year, and it made it to the top of the bestseller list. This has been my dream for years, to write a book that people wanted to read, that they truly liked. My husband also achieved one of his life goals this year, as he got the lead in a major Broadway play. We are all very proud of him, and this has been a year of celebration. Lily is making us both proud by saying alternately that she wants to be a writer and an actor. Samantha and Joseph are both too young to really understand, but they love the excitement.
Year Ten: With all our success, Alton and I decided to complete our family through adoption. We adopted eight-month-old twins from Guatemala, Viviana Natalia and Gabriel Taddeo. Viva and Gabe are both adorable with silky black hair and velvety brown eyes. Lily, Samantha, and Joseph are all enchanted by their new brother and sister, and we adore our new children. We couldn’t have asked for a better end to our first decade of marriage.
