Her husband, George, age 28, works as a veterinarian in a nearby animal hospital.Year 1: The Irvings long to become parents, but Miriam is informed that her Polycystic Ovary Syndrome will compromise her fertility. Therefore, the Irvings decide to adopt a child from Russia; they bring home 3-year old Andrey in November. Andrey is a precocious child whose blue eyes sparkle with enthusiasm; by his birthday on December 11th, he can hold basic conversations in English.

On December 24th – just in time for Christmas – the Irvings bring home 8-month old Marie and Elizabeth. Caroline could not have asked for a better Christmas present.

Miriam is no fan of snakes, but she names the poor creature “Little Andy,” after her eldest son.

Miriam dies on February 3rd, one day after her 22nd wedding anniversary. Her final words are, “I love you,” spoken to her husband as he adjusts the pillows on her bed. Miriam dies two weeks before her 44th birthday.
