Another Kingdom Congrats Sign-Up
I'll just go ahead and say now, for the first week or so updates will be sporadic and there may only be two or so as I finish up the semester. I'll try my best to get one at least every other day.
So, about the game. This time around, we will be playing a kingdom set on a world similar to our own but with fanstastical elements. Magic and mythical animals, some other intelligent species as well if you would like, such as elves, goblins, dwarves, and such. A fairytale world, but NOT necessarily a medieval-style world. The first to sign up will determine the tone of the game as well as the native language for names. And in this game, we'll be starting right from the formation of the kingdom.
Kriana as a united kingdom only came into being a year ago. With the kingdom of Lethia to the west and north, the kingdom of Dakla to the east, and the Lari Ocean to the south, the area was simply a group of small kingdoms with a loose alliance for trade. It is a rich area, with fertile land, good rainfall, natural harbors, and the Kria River running straight down from the northern mountains and providing a natural highway down the middle of the area. These small kingdoms were constantly waging small battles with one another over disputed territory or an insult from one ruler to the other, the larger kingdoms said more out of boredom than anything else. This constantly bickering area was an easy target for the army from the north, an army of nomadic peoples who came across the Northern Mountains seeking territory and tribute for their far-away king. Lethia and Dakla were both too large and too powerful to attack, but the area between was vulernable enough that for years the people were beset, forced into thrall. For nearly a lifetime this lasted, until finally one person who was brave enough and stupid enough and charismatic enough to raise a real army began moving among the kingdoms, gathering the talented and the brave of all peoples, convincing leaders that the only way to defeat the people that held them down was to unite. Five years of gathering, spying, and planning, all led by this driven person, finally came to a head in the two-year long War of Rebellion, a brief but bloody war that effectively drove the nomadic army back to their home city. Too involved in other wars springing up, the king who ruled these armies decided that this one relatively small place was not important enough to try to win back once lost.
After the battle, the leaders of the small kingdoms and the generals who had led the battles all met and agreed that the only thing to do was to unite into one kingdom. This kingdom they named Kriana, for the Great Kria River that ran through it, and the one who had started all the planning and done the brunt of the work was unanimously put as the ruler. The largest city in the area, a beautiful port city located both on the Kria and the ocean named Fairlin, was set as the city, and there this new ruler was crowned. A grand castle was given up by the former king (now a member of the royal court), and there the ruler made their royal seat and recently married one of their most trusted allies and best military leaders. Now the work begins of making sure Kriana, the new young kingdom, remains united and has a place on the world stage.
Now, what the person who signs up first (and therefore will be this ruler) has to decide is:
Are you a king or a queen? Either one is fine, but describe yourself and the general you married (military leaders can be women without anyone thinking it unusual in my world). Do you love this person, or is it a more political marriage? Assume you at least like and trust this person Sorry, but this should be a heterosexual relationship.
The language you want to use for native-Krianan names (assume all the small kingdoms used the same language). We'll use names from this world to make it simpler.
The time-period feel of the game (any type of feel from our world, from the beginning of recorded history to about the 1800s, so you have plenty of leeway!)
The general mood of the new kingdom: is it still shaky, is it strong, do they have good relations with their neighboring kingdoms, how are they building their economy.
Just how fantastical this world is: is magic common or rare, are there fantastical peoples and animals and how common are they, what other fantastical elements are there?
So, finally, here's the sign-up. If the ruler decides there are other intelligent beings besides human, your family can be one, but please specify and use the same naming patterns. If there are other beings, they will be part of every walk of life including nobility. Same-sex couples will be allowed, just not for the ruler (sorry!)

Family Name: Magro
DH: Romolo Urbano Magro (24)
DW: Lavinia Christiana Magro [née Gibbs] (19)
Status: Low commoner (werewolf / mage)
Lavinia Gibbs is the daughter of a cobbler, living in a relatively peaceful part of the land (except during the war, where nowhere was peaceful). When she was a young child, she exhibited signs of magical capabilities. Training her to be a mage was hardly easy for her family, but they managed to find her a decent tutor who geared her towards a sort of animalistic magic - it seems like Lavinia is best suited as a sort of Natural Mage, the sort that can 'communicate' with animals. It was a decent education, although Lavinia's family wondered what she will do with her specialty, which is not exactly well-known as useful or lucrative.
It was during a lone practicing session that Lavinia met a strange black wolf in the woods. Frightened, she tried to use her magic to speak to the wolf, but to her surprise, the wolf began to howl as if in pain. Lavinia watched in horror and wonder as the wolf slowly and excruciatingly morphed into a human male - it was not a wolf, but a lycanthrope. The werewolf's name was Romolo Magro, and he and Lavinia soon found themselves good friends. Romolo explained that he came from a nomadic tribe of werewolves, but a fight had ensued in his getting kicked out of his clan. Lavinia offered him shelter in her home, and as time flied the two of them found themselves married. It was not an easy life for Romolo and Lavinia, but they managed to pull through somehow.
Background information:
(Since no-one had taken the liberty, I assume I can "make" my own rules for this part? If not, please tell me, and I'll delete this.)
Werewolves are a sort of magical creature/human sub-species known for, what else, their human-wolf shape-shifting abilities. The werewolf gene is passed mostly on male offspring, and although females can be carriers of the gene, they only rarely ever experience its symptoms (although a female carrier and a male werewolf can result in having female werewolf offspring - the gene is based on the haemophilia gene in real life).

I like it!
I'm forseeing some future plots points with this...maybe with Romolo petitioning the new queen for rights for werewolves and other not-fully-human creatures? Seems like something a newly formed kingdom would have to deal with, doesn't it?

Hurm...
Sounds pretty interesting for me! And certainly, if Romolo should think that the new queen sounds approachable enough, he will try to petition to her. That is, of course, after we figure out what other not-fully-human creatures (sic) are...

Family Name: Trahaearn
DW: Lady Paiva Katrin [Maric] (25)
DH: Lord Aneirin [Neirin] Ivor (30)
Status: Noble
Aneirin had never thought he would marry Paiva, a woman descended from the nomads who attacked Kriana. He had loved another lady before conflict broke out in the north of the country, where he had lived his entire childhood. He had no choice but to go to war and assist his country in expelling the invaders, and he became captain of a regiment of fighting men and women. He met his future wife halfway through the war. A group of refugees had come to a hidden encampment seeking shelter from recent attacks, and the icy Paiva was among them. He admired her hardy spirit, and did not judge her by her ancestry. Surprised by his attitude, she accepted his hospitality and kindness, and the two eventually became friends. When Aneirin learned his beloved was killed, his friendship with Paiva was his only source of comfort. After the war, his heart turned to her, and they were wed in spite of her low social standing.
Paiva is a strong-willed woman with a reputation for having a rather stern, cold demeanor. Hard times had produced a hard person. Her father was a native of Kriana, but her mother was a northern nomad. As a result, they were looked down upon by many members of the community, who viewed the nomads as wicked savages. Moreover, her family was not very wealthy, though they owned a small share of land. When she was six, Paiva's mother died giving birth to her younger sister. After the war, she was the only surviving member of her family. Paiva has never felt comfortable among the other nobles due to her ancestry and upbringing. Nor does she know whether to embrace her heritage or shun it completely.
Neirin is the near-opposite of Paiva; he was born into a minor noble house and never went long without ample food and money. He is open, amiable, and lively, and trusts others easily -- perhaps even a little too much. Though he found happiness in the days following the War of Rebellion, his memory is still plagued by the carnage; the right hand he lost serves as a more physical reminder of those days.
In spite of their differences, however, Paiva and Aneirin have managed to form a trusting and loving partnership. Paiva possesses a minor amount of magical ability.

DW: Arianna Cassandra (18)
DH: Nicholas Victor (nee Este) (18)
Status: sister and brother-in-law to Queen Minnie (baby of the family?)
The much-younger baby of the family, Ari still grew up close to her sisters. She admired them, and they doted on her. They taught her many things as she grew up; how to fight and swim and avoid tongue-lashings from their tutors and parents. She was always able to get away with more then anyone but Demetrius, who always seemed to be able to charm their parents. She always had a special gift for reading people and finding out what they were thinking, something that endeared her to adults as much as her long black lashes and bright smile. She grew up somewhat wild, climbing trees and walls and constantly roaming and asking questions. She had a natural stubbornness that made her always refuse to give up on anything until she conquered it, even if it sometimes meant scrapes and mishaps on her part.
Intelligent and devoted to her studies, Ari always hated living under the thumb of their conquerers. Ari was glad when her sister began recruiting people for her cause. Though she was only eleven at the time, she believed in Minnie and the cause she wanted to fight for, and refused to be left out. Though Minnie and Hermione (and most especially their parents) wanted to keep her out of the entire thing, the plain truth was Ari was useful. Her youth and childish charm were disarming enough that people accepted her, and her gifts of observance and reading people proved invaluable in helping convince many to join their cause. Hearing a child so committed and dedicated also helped shame many into action.

Hi little sister!
This is a pretty kick butt group of sisters! A queen, a mage, and a spy-turned-diplomat! I look forward to writing with you again!

Can't wait!
Shall we be a close-knit group of sisters, perhaps somewhat fed-up with our pampered brother?
Shall we be a close-knit group of sisters, perhaps somewhat fed-up with our pampered brother?
Yes, I think that's a good idea. It's obvious that the three of us worked hard and fought for the freedom of the country, and while we were close before, the struggle has brought us together as friends and sisters! It seems as though our brother contributed less and perhaps in a less involved way and so we are more out of touch with him in recent months.

DH: Demetrius Leon (23)
DW: Alexandra Euphemia [Megalos] (17)
Status: Brother and Sister-in-Law to the Queen
Demetrius is the younger brother of Queen Minnie and Hermione. He'd always been spoiled as a child, and as a result grew up very immature. To get him to shape up, his parents forced him to enlist in the army. Demetrius's parents also arranged a marriage between him and the daughter of a well-off family friend. Demetrius didn't love the girl and considered her boring. One night when Demetrius was out with his friends at a bar, he met a young girl named Alexandra. After spending a passionate night together, Alexandra agreed to marry Demetrius, despite his current engagement. Demetrius's family generally didn't respond well to Alexandra, believing her to be the reason Demetrius broke off his engagement. They also thought she was shallow and a gossip. Alexandra was thrilled when Demetrius's sister became Queen, as it substantially improved her social standing and wealth.
Many women at Court dislike Alexandra, as rumors have surfaced that she is mean, vain, and unvirtuous. Alexandra ignores everyone else's opinion as she is secure in the knowledge that now that they are very wealthy, her and her husband are very powerful. She loves the lavish parties, and beautiful clothes and jewelery at Court. She has been known to lash out at servants when things aren't done exactly her way.
Demetrius is very proud of his sister, and truthfully, is relieved that he isn't the one who is King. He's content to live his life in the palace with his beautiful, yet difficult wife. He knows that Alexandra throws frequent temper tantrums, but finds it easier to just give her what she wants, seeing as how she never actually takes her anger out on Demetrius.

Nice to have a younger brother!
Demetrius is currently listed as 24, the same age as Hermione. Were you intending them to be twins or for him to be younger? Minnie is 25, Hermione 24, and Arianna (a younger sister who signed up just after you) is 18.

Oh, it doesn't matter to me. I didn't intend for them to be twins but that might be interesting if you're okay with it.
Hm. I hadn't really thought of it, but at the moment he is the only son, which could explain the spoiling. So whatever you feel like!

Hermione is the Queen's slightly younger sister. The two of them have been quite close since birth and Hermione supported Minnie in her endeavor to protect the country. Added to the mix is Hermione's status as a mage. She is studying with one of the most powerful mages in the country and fought bravely and adeptly during the war. Her tutor often says that she is greatly talented, and Hermione often advises her sister on magical affairs. She is a tall woman, as mages tend to be, and has the startlingly pale violet and silver-flecked eyes often associated with very powerful mages. She has dark hair like her younger sister, which she often wears in a long braid, or loose around her shoulders.
Her husband, William, is the son of the Old King, and their marriage was meant to stabilize the political climate of the country following the war. The couple is still warming up to each other, since the marriage was a political alliance and they had only met a few times prior to their wedding. He is a good man, gracious as his father, and is content with losing the throne to his wife's sister. He still wields enough influence and maintains enough wealth that he is comfortable, and he was one of the forces behind his father's abdication. He supported Minnie during the struggle, often donating some of his fortune and providing resources she required. He was impressed with Minnie, and for awhile, wished to court her. Political fortunes and Minnie's stubbornness sent her another way, and eventually led William and his father to propose marriage to Hermione, through her sister the Queen. William is a good man, kind and even-tempered, a good anchor to the more fiery Hermione. He is very good-looking and the kingdom whispers that William will father many lovely children with the beautiful Hermione.

Status: Important commoner. Jolyon is an assistant admiral in the Krianan Navy.
In the Willetts family, mages make naming decisions not the mother or father of the child. Fiona has weak magical abilities and doesn't really consider herself to be a mage. So Calliope makes such decisions after asking the mother-to-be a series of questions. Mages often live with the eldest child of the same gender for some unknown reason in this particular family. The mage is effectively a status symbol and is able to make potent medicines and make fire without flint. It's often believed that mages are immortal, but Jolyon actually had to kill a mage who planned to mutiny during the last Civil War.

DH: Lord Ambrose Bartholomew Robert Lockwood (25)
DW: Lady Flora Ermintrude (née Arkwright) Lockwood (20)
Status: Chief Healer of Kriana / Nobility
When Ambrose was born, his father – a wealthy, powerful landowner in the old order – was delighted to have a son and heir, and when Ambrose’s magic was discovered, his father immediately hired the best tutors around to teach his son to become a great warrior. Unfortunately for Ambrose’s father, Ambrose was never very good at battle magic. It seemed that Ambrose was more suited to healing magic.
Thus, when the War of Rebellion began, Ambrose was at the front lines – not as a warrior, but as the Head Healer, for all those years of training had made Ambrose the best Healer in the area.
It was during a particularly bloody battle that a girl of eighteen or nineteen was brought into the Healing Quarters. The girl was a warrior for Kriana; she’d been burned on one of her arms by one of the enemy mages. Ambrose was, of course, able to heal her, but even he couldn’t stop most of the scarring.
For the next few weeks, the girl spent much time in the Healing Quarters, letting her arm heal. And, though it was frustrating to spend so much time as an invalid, the girl and Ambrose quickly became friends. The girl revealed that her name was Flora and that she’d been the daughter of a boat-maker – a peasant – and she was a childhood friend of the Rey family.
Ambrose had been instantly smitten with Flora, but, being shy, never revealed his true feelings during their time together. Eventually, Flora returned to battle and, after the war, both Ambrose and Flora were rewarded with lands and titles greater than Ambrose’s father’s had ever been.
During the ceremony at which they were both rewarded for their services in the war, Ambrose decided to risk it all and declare his love to Flora. They were married a few days later, Flora having been as much in love with Ambrose as he was with her since their last time together.
Now, Ambrose is Chief Healer of Kriana and Flora, though a Lady, still finds ways to use her skills as a warrior…

Family Name: Waterside
DW: Coral Ophelia (18)
DH: Magnus Arthur (25)
Status: nobility / magical (not sure how magical we are going)
Magnus Waterside is a nobal among the Krianan people, he strategically married Coral Hollis a forgein family came into his harbor with their daughter Coral claiming to have magical abilities and needing shelter. Magnus took the family in for a short while on their way and after learning their ability to wield magic, unlike those he has seen wield before, he offered to take their daughter in marriage.
Magnus is a rather handsome man, not extravagently so. He has a prominent nose, large eyes and large mouth that would look odd if he stature was not so large as well. Magnus owns a harbor and controls a large portion of the trade in and out of Kriana making him very wealthy and influential.
Coral has a foreign appearance. She has blonde curly hair and a gray eye that is not noramlly seen in Kriana or its surronding area and a violet eye commonly associated with mages. It is easy to tell she is not from around this part of the world. Coral in contrast to her husband is extremely tiny, she barely reaches his chest when she is standing. She has delicate features and an appearance of fragility. This is not to be mistaken for the mass amount of magical power she can harness.
Coral has a deep dark past and while she appreciates Magnus and all he has done for her family, she is still in fear of those she was running from. Coral is not truly in love with Magnus although he has provided her with shelter and protection along with a life that is most comfortable after a year of running. Coral appreciates Magnus and therefore is currently happy and obedient. Magnus sent Coral's parents on their journey with funds to help them arrive to their destination with ease.
Magnus hopes that future offspring with Coral will be able to have her special abilities and that he will be able to use both his children and his wife for his gain. Magnus plans to keep Coral's abilities a secret in case of jealousy or suspicion. Some of Coral's abilities are not unlike Mage's but it is impossible for her to be a mage given her small stature and one gray eye. Magnus has a theory on what he believes Coral to be.
Note:
Coral is not a mage, I plan to see where our story takes us and let her character unfold so to speak!

Family Name: Rey
DW: Theodosia Minerva (25)
DH: Silas Emerson [Hawking] (27)
Status: Ruler
Minnie was always rather mule-headed and spirited and at sixteen decided that she'd had enough of her family constantly having to live in fear so she began to send letters and gather resources and after seven years the invaders had receeded. The people wanted Minnie as Queen so the old King graciously stepped down. She had a rushed courtship with one of the fellow human generals, Silas, who came from a good family and was very intelligent.
Silas and Minnie have a mutual respect for one another and might have even progressed to marriage on their own if they'd been allowed to wait.
Krianan's are enthralled and all in a wonderful mood over their recent victory. They are freely spending the money that they got in the war and there are many pregnant women. Kriana is experiencing a bit of trouble with Dakla, who doesn't love how boisterous the Krianan's are being but Lethia and Kriana are already working on a trade agreement and it is going well.
Okay, land stuff:
Mages (male of female) are as common as blue eyes are in our world. As in, there's usually at least one in every family but you don't have to have one if you don't want to.
Any kind of magical creature you want exists and, for simplicity's sake, let's say they all speak Krianan [English].
English is the main language but you can have names from other languages if you like, ie. Ryan [Irish, English], Conrad [English, German, Ancient Germanic], and the names are all gender-neutral.
There aren't any talking animals, except for mythological ones, but some mages can understand animals.
Time-period is Classical Greece except you have more freedom and there are no slaves. Servants are acceptable though.

Question
Were our parents nobles? Rulers of one of the smaller kingdoms, perhaps? Or were they simply rich enough commoners to raise intelligent daughters and one rather lazy son? We should probably come up with names and a backstory too.

Hmm...nobles would probably work best, since all three daughters seem to be intelligent [probably the son too] so they'd have the time, money, etcetera to be able to have tutors and books. For names...maybe one of them should have at least one mythological name, or at least like them since all three girls have them. And I dunno about backstory, what do you think?
Hello sister!
Hello! :) I've just signed up with a couple who are Theodosia's sister and brother-in-law. Hermione is a mage, and William is the son of the former King. I look forward to writing with you! :D

Hi, I look forward to writing/working with you as well. I'm assuming Minnie and Hermione are close? =)
Yes, I think so. I think they were close as children but grew even closer during the war.
