Year 1: Séraphin and Mila are a young recently married couple living in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Neither have any Taiwanese roots, Séraphin being of French and English descent and Mila being English and Irish, but both have made new friends and colleagues in the exotic country. Séraphin is a bit of a polyglot and after studying Asian languages speaks fluent Mandarin - Mila, since beginning to date her husband, has been learning from him and speaks a little, enough to get by, but sometimes struggles. It has long been Séraphin's dream to teach English abroad, and when he was offered a job teaching English to students in a university in Kaohsiung, Mila wasn't going to stand in his way. Since moving there she has used her chef's training to open a new restaurant in the city, specialising in fusion cuisine. They have been trying for a child for some time when Mila falls pregnant - and are surprised by the birth of twin boys, Noah Alexander and Nathaniel Sean.
Year 2: During the university summer holidays, the young couple decide to go on a family holiday. They first return back to the UK to see Noah and Nate's proud grandparents, and then jet off to the southern France, to the city of Avignon which Séraphin fondly remembers from his childhood. There, they spend a relaxing two weeks, sunbathing, relaxing and sightseeing before the exhausting long haul flight back to Taiwan and the daily grind.
Year 3: When another set of twins follows Noah and Nate, Séraphin and Mila are surprised to say the least. To the best of their knowledge, neither has any familial history of twins and both are overwhelmed at the thought of four children under the age of four. When the girls are born, however, the fears begin to vanish. Mila wants to give them flower names, while Séraphin envisages Manderin flower middle names, such as Hua or Lan. Mila refuses to compromise, though, and eventually Séraphin concedes that they might not flow very well. They name their new daughters Ivy Dahlia and Violet Rose.
Year 4: Asked to be godparents to friends' son - Christopher Drake Morgan
Year 5: Travel
Year 6: Phin and Mila decide to adopt a child; Phin dreams of giving a disadvantaged child a lovely home like the Romilly family, and while Mila is less certain - she is hardly the linguist her husband is - she agrees. They already have four children of their own, and it seems the compassionate and worldly aware thing to do. They end up adopting a child from Taiwan itself, a 6 year old girl whose name in the orphanage is Jiawen (嘉雯). Because she is not a baby and for their own reasons - Phin believes it's wrong to remove a child completely from his or her culture of birth, which was part of his reason for wanting to adopt a Chinese or Taiwanese child, and Mila because she believes the the meaning of the name, "beautiful clouds" is lovely - they initially intend to keep her name the same. However, neither the Romilly nor Stone families can pronounce Jiawen, so this plan is eventually abandoned. They instead decide to use Jiawen as a middle name, and pick out some names to suggest as first names. Jiawen likes the name Amelia, although she likes her name best. It's decided that when around Chinese language and culture, she will be Jiawen, and her "anglophone" name shall be Amelia - when she grows up, she can decide what she will call herself, or stick to the same established system. Although she can speak no English, Séraphin has made a career out of teaching English as a second language, and she makes good, if somewhat difficult, progress. Because she is a similar age to Noah and Nathaniel, they soon become close friends, and Mila and her new daughter find a shared bond over a love of cooking sweet treats.
Year 7: A year after adopting Lia, as she is becoming known, Mila accidentally falls pregnant again. Séraphin is disgruntled about this, as they had agreed that they weren't sure if they wanted any more children. They already had five children under the age of 10 in the household, and he wasn't sure they could give them all the time they needed. Mila, too, felt it was important that Lia was integrated properly into the family and is concerned what the birth of a new child will mean. Indeed, their adopted daughter is initially wary and upset about Mila's pregnancy, so the couple take great care to make sure she is comfortable with the events. When, towards the end of the year, Mila gives birth to her third son, however, Lia is immediately adoring of her adoptive baby brother, forever begging to be allowed to hold him and play with him. They name him Sable Blake on a whim - Séraphin likes Blake, and Mila had heard the name Sable somewhere and thought it was interesting and slightly unusual.
