Prince Joseph is the younger brother of King Leopold and Prince Philippe. Because of this, he has lived a carefree life, without the pressure of becoming King some day. He enjoys hunting, gambling, horse back riding, playing sports, and throwing elaborate parties. Joseph rarely ever let himself get close to others, except for his mother. Joseph has been rumored to have carnal relations with the young ladies at Court, but nothing has actually been proven.
On the day of Prince Philippe's wedding to Princess Valentina, Valentina's younger cousin Diana caught Joseph's eye. Diana was only three years younger, and Joseph desired her. At night, after the festivities were over, Joseph visited Diana in her bed chamber. Diana dismissed him without letting him say a word, as she had heard about his reputation and wanted nothing to do with him. A week later, as Diana's family was preparing to return to Italy, Joseph's father started negotiating an arranged marriage between the two. He felt it was time for Joseph to settle down. Upon discovering what his father had planned for him, Joseph went into a rage. He wanted Diana, but not like that.
As a niece to the King and Queen of Italy, Diana had a very priveleged life. She grew up with seven brothers, but is the farthest thing from a tomboy. Diana has a very extravagant taste in clothes and jewellery. She dreaded her marriage to Joseph because even though she couldn't help but be physically attracted to him, she knew he had a reputation as a playboy. She felt that he wouldn't honor her as a husband should. She begged her father to not make her go through with the wedding, but he insisted it was for the best. Diana resents her father and Joseph's brother King Leopold, as they were the ones who arranged the wedding.
The two were married at the Palais de Soleil, the Royal Summer Palace on Diana's sixteenth birthday. Diana wanted nothing less than to be married to Joseph, but felt she had no choice. She kept to herself for much of the celebration, leaving many to assume she was cold and unaproachable. The only brightside in Diana's opinion is that her older cousin Valentina lives at court. Her and Joseph are not in love at all, but Diana hopes that due to his attraction to her, they will be able to form some type of friendship and who knows, maybe love will blossom after all.
