Slowly, life has stabilised for Severin and Elma. Elma, always so fragile after her fever three years ago, never fully recovered, and she would've been unable to keep up with her dressmaking demands if it weren't for Franziska and Jutte always being there to help her. Theodor, on the other hand, has grown very close to Christoph - every once in a while, his family would find him praying that his brother be given sight. Still, Theodor dotes on Christoph, and happily teaches and describes him things he cannot see beyond the blurry colours.
But just when they thought things were getting better, things started getting stranger and stranger. First there were two years of painful drought, quickly followed by a very wet and rainy year. Harvests were especially low, and word spread that the king of France has asked King Walter to assist them in a war. While these matters of state never directly affect Severin, Elma, and their family, they could not help but wonder what will happen. Severin was inclined to think that King Walter would disagree, but Elma thinks he might just agree, for Queen Adelheid's sake.
In the middle of that confusion, Elma brought forth another daughter. The girl was named Bettina Leonore, after her late sister. Bettina's birth weakened Elma even more, but she knew she had to be brave, for her family's sake.
