The von Falkenraths are a wealthy and well-respected Bialan military family, albeit not an aristocratic one. Rather, their fortune stems from a myriad of military expeditions which brought back untold riches from conquered lands. The von Falkenraths are regular fixtures in the top brass of the Bialan army.
Brought up steeped in military culture (his father Gerhard is a lieutenant general), at the age of 17 Diederich became the youngest commissioned officer in the army. Three years later, he married Johanna Langenheim, the daughter of one of his father's colonels. The two had known each other since childhood and had all but been arranged to be married since birth. Diederich's military duties kept the couple apart for the better part of another three years, but an unprecedented period of peace between Bial and traditional enemies has finally brought Diederich back home.
