Just a year after Carrie was born, Violette went out to the root cellar and found a child there stealing some of the preserves she had put up. Rather than turn the child in to authorities to be punished, Henry and Violette decided to keep the child. He was eight at the time, forced from his home by illness that killed his parents and younger brother. The child's name is Stephen Ezekiel Barnes, and he is the son of an American family who had moved to the area not long before. Now, Stephen is twelve, and is very helpful. He knows a lot about farming, and helps Henry out in the fields. He often tries to earn his keep, but Henry and Violette have no intentions of throwing him out. Two weeks ago, Violette delivered a healthy little girl, named Clara Louisa. Violette chose the name Louisa after Louis Pasteur, a famous Frenchman. Doctors advised against the pregnancy, but Violette and Henry weren't planning on another child, and everything turned out all right.
