When the Queen and Prince announced the name of their daughter, Caroline, many people were surprised. The speculation had been that the future Queen of England would be named Elizabeth, after Katherine's later grandmother, the former Queen of England. Instead Caroline was chosen to honour Katherine's younger sister, Caroline, who died shortly after birth. Each middle name honours member of Katherine and John's family; Katherine is for the Queen, Mary is the name of Katherine's mother (former Queen, now Queen mother), and Louise after John's mother.
