About a month before Victor met Caroline, he was in a relationship with another woman, named Kayla. It was a brief and causual fling, lasting only a month before they decided they were incompatible and split up. Victor met Caroline soon after, and the two fell in love quickly and were married within six months of meeting. Victor had put Kayla out of his mind as he had all his past girlfriends, until a few weeks before his wedding when she told him she was pregnant. Her boyfriend after Victor left her when he found out the child wasn't his (timeline was wrong). Victor was stunned and devastated, but Kayla didn't ask him for anything. She said she just thought he should know. She didn't need child support, but Victor set up an account anyway and put money into it to help out. He spent what was supposed to be a two-day business trip with Kayla in the hospital, and he helped name her Charlotte Anna. He debated telling Caroline, but didn't know how to explain without hurting her, so decided to keep his daughter a secret. For three years it worked well. Kayla sent him pictures of Charlotte, and he saw her a few times a year when he could pretend business trips or golf trips with one of his friends. Once Rio was born, he gave Charlotte pictures so she would know what her brother looked like. But a year after Rio was born, Kayla died suddenly of cancer. Kayla's parents offered to take Charlotte in, but Victor knew he had no choice. He was tired of living two lives and keeping secrets from Caroline, and he wanted his daughter with him. So he confessed everything to his wife. Caroline was terribly hurt and angry; not about Charlotte, necessarily, but abotu the fact he had lied to her for so long. She felt she would have understood if he had told her. After all, Charlotte was concieved before they even met! But the years of lies and secrets were almost enough to tear the marriage apart. Caroline considered separating from Victor for a while, but decided against it. After all, she still loved him dearly. So Charlotte came to live with the Laurent family. At first it hurt Caroline to see her, but almost immediately the toddler's sweetness and affectionate ways melted her heart. The two quickly grew to love one another, for which Victor was very glad and relieved. Charlotte and Rio adore one another as well and play together often. Charlotte has always called Caroline Mommy, and recently they finally made it official as Caroline legally adopted Charlotte.
