Hiram and Elissa were devastated when little Aileen Martha Estelle was stillborn. Elissa mourned for her second daughter. Hiram was filled with grief at the loss of his third child. Darius and Roland were sorrowful when the news was broken to them, for they were excited to have another step-sibling. Zephaniah and Matilda, who didn't understand, wanted to know where their baby brother or sister was. Hiram had to explain to them that their little sibling wasn't born alive. Matilda understood. "Oh," she said, her little tears running down her soft, baby cheeks. Zephaniah didn't understand. He was angry that he couldn't see his sister. Hiram and Elissa finally decided to allow Zephaniah to see the corpse of his stillborn sister. Their little boy visibly paled at the sight of the little body that would have been his sister if she had lived. The tears ran down his cheeks, as Elissa tucked him into her loving arms. Zephaniah finally got that his sister didn't even get to see the world.
It was a month or so after Elissa gave birth to the still born Aileen that the coronation banquet was held. While there she got to associate with many people she hadn't seen for long stretches of time, including her parents and siblings. Hiram had introduced her to the son of one of his parents' friends whom he had known since he was little, despite the fact that Elijah was seventeen years-older than him, when he had married Elissa. Now, one of the first people she spotted, was Duke Elijah's wife, Adina. Elissa and Adina had become good friends when they first met and they now talked over dinner. Hiram and Elijah talked as well. Hiram and Elissa didn't know about Elijah and Adina's conspiracy, otherwise they wouldn't have been associating with them, for they were very loyal to the young king. They heard the rumors and didn't like the sound of them.
Since they first met, Ariel and Peninnah, Elijah and Adina's twins, had been trying to convince Darius and Roland to play with them. Roland and Darius had refused at first. Neither found the twins all that trustworthy, even though they had just met. Over the months, when Elijah and Adina had come to visit Hiram and Elissa, Ariel and Peninnah continued to try to get Darius and Roland to play with them. Finally, at the coronation banquet, Roland gave in. He just couldn't bear it. Ariel and Peninnah, Roland thought, would make good playmates. He had been watching them the past couple of years, and decided that they could be trusted. Darius was shyer than Roland and still didn't find Ariel and Peninnah trustworthy. While he was sitting by his mother, listening to Elissa and Adina talk, out of the corner of his eye, Darius spotted Ariel and Peninnah's sister Miriam wandering about and followed her. Miriam suddenly turned around and found Darius standing motionlessly behind her, his face red. For the rest of the night, Darius and Miriam hung out together, while Roland, Ariel, and Peninnah played together.
Zephaniah and Matilda were bored. There was no one there for them to play with. For the first part of the banquet, they sat with their mother or father. Eventually, they wandered off. Zephaniah was drawn to the new babies, especially the baby girls. It was quite clear that he missed the baby sister he never knew. There were only a few baby girls, though. When he ran into the butler's wife, Jocelyn, with her new baby girl, he had to stop and ask to see her. Jocelyn allowed Zephaniah and Matilda to see her daughter. Zephaniah was pleased to have gotten to see another little baby girl. They find Elijah and Adina's new daughter, Dorcas, with her older brother Daniel. Zephaniah crawled up beside Daniel and peered at the baby. He couldn't help but sigh at the thought of Aileen. Matilda grabbed hold of Zephaniah's arm and dragged him back to their mother. They were, anyway, only one.
The weeks since the coronation banquet slip by, with Hiram and Elissa's children and their newfound playmates seeing more and more of each other, causing Hiram and Elissa to see much of Adina and Elijah.
