In the Empire of Yarrow
Faustina was overjoyed with having all her children home and safe with her once again. So rarely now were they together and this delight was quickly overshadowed by Countess Cornelia’s murder. Faustina knew that her flirtations would get the best of her but never had murder crossed her mind. A young nobleman of the court had fallen in love with Cornelia but when she did not reciprocate her feelings towards the young man but did to another, he murdered both Cornelia and his competition. Adela hastened his execution and he and Cornelia’s trysts were quickly made an example of. Faustina grieved for her young niece and couldn’t help but believe it was all her fault. “Poor Cornelia! I should have sent her away with Ondene,” she would say. “I wish I had sent her away.” A few months later, Adela gave birth to a daughter. Shortly after, Tildon was a father of two new daughters, twins, of his own; the oldest namesaked for their royal House and the younger with a name befitting to her sister. The births lightened Faustina’s heart and slowly began to rise out of her mourning. Tildon still sailed but was only gone for short periods of time. He couldn’t stand to be away from his family especially since Cornelia’s death. “She was dear girl, foolish but dear. Mother loved her so.” Meanwhile, Adela, forever expanding her forefather’s empire, propositioned an isle that could be of great trading importance to the Empire and made her younger brother, Emil, the overseer of the politics. She herself could not marry the young king but Emil could marry the king’s niece therefore uniting the small island into the empire. The Empress named Emil Empirical Grand Duke of Yarrow so that the marriage would be considered equal to a duchess and so as not to insult the king. “We offer you not only peace but most importantly protection within our empirical realms,” Grand Duke Emil relayed to the kingdom from Empress Adela. Duchess Annag was hesitant to marry outside of her country but the king persuaded her that her marriage to the Grand Duke of the Empire Yarrow would mean safety and security for her, her family, and her people. “I have no daughters and Empress Adela has no sons that are of age and it would be nice to have safety sooner rather than later. Yes, Annag, you must marry the Duke of Yarrow.” She sailed away with Emil aboard his brother’s, Tildon, ship. “Do not misconstrue our union in marriage as love, Sire,” she told Emil once they arrived to the Yarrow palace. “But you have, thus far, treated me kindly and with the utmost respect and for this, I thank you.” Two weeks later, they were married and recognized as Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Yarrow. The Empire was abuzz with the happenings of the Royal family but Countess Almena and her engagement was close to being overlooked. She was engaged to a empirical supported and Earl of Yarrow who so happened to be a childhood sweetheart. He grew up within the palace and was quite close with the royal family. His father was close friends with Emperor Hugo and one of Hugo’s greatest advisors. Sir Bartholomew was in line to be Earl of Yarrow upon his brother’s death. Bartholomew tried his best to console young Almena in loosing her only sister and closest family member. The afternoon before Cornelia’s death, she confided into Cornelia that she wished that she would heed their aunt’s advice and join Ondene. “Imagine, Cornelia. You could become a grand priestess and be honored by all of the land! Even the Empirical family itself!” she begged. “What, and give up all the luxuries and privileges I have here in the court? Nonsense, sweet sister. Nonsense.” Cornelia scoffed. Almena mourning lasted longer than Faustina. Almena could not find joy in the birth of three new, royal daughters. “What are they to me,” she thought bitterly. “Curse Cornelia and her selfishness! Never thinking, only acting!” She was furious. Bartholomew told her that he is her family now and, once they were officially married, would always be.
