Shortly after Mirabelle's second birthday celebrations, Queen Katarina became pregnant again. This time she was due in autumn, which meant she was her heaviest at the hottest part of the year. This was hard on her, as she gained more weight with this pregnancy. Her physicians advised her not to exhaust herself, so for the last two months of her pregnancy Kat allowed Arthur to take over more duties on her behalf so she could rest. She didn't really mind this; Arthur handled things well, and it gave her more time to spend with Mirabelle, who has become quite a bright, beautiful, and precocious toddler. Mirabelle was quite excited about having a new baby int he family and often told her parents it was going to be a sister. As it turned out, she was right! Kat delivered annother baby girl on the first cool day of the fall. She and Arthur had already settled on a girl's name: Gloriana, a name they thought fit with Mirabelle's, sounded beautiful, and had a lovely meaning. Maeve is after Arthur's mother--her middle name, as Gloriana Joanna was just too much! Kat wanted the second middle name to be after Arthur, but he refused all feminine versions of his first name she could come up with. So they decided on Lucia, after his first middle name. Sarah and Grace are popular Krianan names, as well as being two of Kat's favorite simple names.
Kat had not even had time to fully recover after Gloriana's birth before she and Arthur heard tell of a scandal brewing with Kat's brother Thomas. Instead of joining the staff of the Royal University as an instructor after his graduation, as was expected, Thomas had chosen the life of a bard, wandering and supporting himself with his music. This itself was enough to set people talking, but rumors began surfacing that he had taken up with a female student while at university, seduced her, promised to marry her, and then fled. This is a serious thing in Kriana, seen as a supreme insult to the woman and her family, and can be punishable by law if he had accepted gifts from her beforehand. The girl in question, one Lady Penelope, is from a very influential and wealthy family, which only worsens things. PEnelope had been rejected by Thomas, and Kat, her father, her sister, and Arthur are all certain that she herself started the rumors for revenge at his snubbing. Thomas has rejected all girls who have come his way, saying he hadn't found the right person (Kat suspects he may not prefer women, but has not directly asked him). For now, Kat and her advisors agree that the best thing to do is ignore the rumors, which are centered on the university and city anyway and not the entire kingdom. As long as Lady Penelope and her family do not openly accuse Thomas, they are hopeful the rumors will just die away. Thomas himself has been advised to stay near the city in case he needs to confront the rumors directly, but otherwise life goes on as normal.
