In the mighty kingdom of Kriana.
The land of Kriana has long been a prosperous and peaceful seafaring nation. Through trade and travel on the sea, they have established valuable friendships with other nations. While they have gone to war and been involved in inter-kingdom politics in the past, for the last seventy years they have been enjoying a long period of peace and prosperity. Their royal line is hereditary, but not patriarchial or based on primogeniture.
Katarina's mother, Queen Helen the Beautiful, died of a tumor when Kat was only fifteen. Since Kat would not legally come of ruling age until she was nineteen, her father, Dowager Consort Robert, ruled in her place as regent. Kat, who adores her father, thought he was doing a good job, but was ready whent he time came for her to take the reigns. Kat has spent her entire life learning to rule from her mother and her tutors, and by the time she came of ruling age she felt ready for the challenge. Her father was extremely proud of the woman she had become, and willingly stepped aside for her. Kat has always been strong-willed and stubborn. At eight she jumped her mare over a six-foot wall just to prove she could. At thirteen she insisted on addressing the royal advisors herself on an idea she had had about the defense of the castle. At the age of seventeen she had married a young lord against the wishes of her advisors, a low-ranking but intelligent and kind and well-known for his musical abilities. They were introduced through Kat's younger brother Thomas, who met him at the Royal University of Music. The two were friends in spite of their two-year age difference, and when Thomas introduced Arthur to his sister,t he two fell in love almost at once. He is fulyl supportive of her, but is also able to tell her when she is wrong or he thinks an idea of hers is foolish. The people are excited about their bold and beautiful young queen, and optimistic about her abilities.
