The Beginning: Background info.
Barley and Sky were married in a simple country wedding last month. Barley's family is very backwoodsy, but they're nice people if you can get past the shotgun and bear traps. Barley travels around the country doing impressions and comedy routines--mostly centered around his name and his hillbilly background. Sky's family is very environmentally-friendly and free-spirited. Sky is going to be a stay-at-home mom, when she and Barley have kids. For now, she's a stay-at-home-wife, although she does travel with Barley to his gigs. Barley and Sky live in a house that Sky's father built next to the ocean. It's a spacious house with lots of windows. Sky's father and mother moved into a different house four years ago further inland, and have been renting that one out ever since. Now that Barley and Sky live there, they hope to fill it with children, and teach them how to swim early on in life. Barley and Sky never were people for driving tiny little cars. Both of them own vans. Barley has a fifteen-passenger van in his name that he rides around in to his various sites of employment. Actually, he lived in the back of the van before he married Sky. Sky wants to sell the van, since its kind of a gas guzzler, but Barley won't part with it. Sky drives an older minivan that has seen better days. However, her father is a good mechanic, and has kept the van in running condition for a long time. Both Barley and Sky can't wait to see what the next decade and a half of their lives holds.
Year 1: family affair: member of family in car crash
Barley and Sky have been doing well, though for the past few months, they have had a bit of a financial struggle. Six months ago, Barley was in a car accident while driving his van to a comedy show he was participating in. The driver of an eighteen-wheeler truck fell asleep at the wheel and veered into his lane. The two vehicles hit head on. The truck driver emerged fairly unscathed--a few bumps and bruises. Barley suffered a concussion and a broken arm as well as numerous facial cuts and abrasions. He spent four days in the hospital before he was coherent enough to come home, but has progressed well since then. He and Sky are getting by on her minivan for now, but plan to buy a car within the next year, when finances allow.
Year 2: Pet: Rodent
After another year with no progress towards having a baby, Sky decided she wanted a pet to keep her company while Barley was on the road (in a teal pickup truck). One week while he was away, Sky went to the local pet store and bought a brown and white guinea pig. She named the guinea pig Icicle, and he has turned into a very social little creature. He likes to run around the living room and sits looking adorable in order to get a treat.
Year 3: random: move
The past year wasn't great for Barley's comedic routine. He and Sky weren't able to make all their utility payments, and they were forced to sell their house. Actually, they sold it back to Sky's parents, who decided to move back in. Barley and Sky moved into the city instead, and are renting a two bedroom apartment on the third floor of a building. Barley doesn't mind the smaller space, but Sky would be much happier somewhere where she could have a backyard. She spends a lot of time at the community park.
Year 4: Pet: Cat
Barley and Sky are doing well. Barley's skills are in more demand, so he's been making a bit more money. He surprised Sky for her birthday two months ago by getting her a kitten. It is a dark chocolate siamese kitten that Sky named Lilah. Lilah is very playful, and is a surprising friend for Icicle.
Year 5: Travel: historical location
Barley and Sky's big thing this year was traveling to Greece. It was a place Sky had always wanted to visit, and Barley has been tucking money away for the past five years and took her to Greece for their fifth wedding anniversary. Sky enjoyed seeing the various islands and historical landmarks there.
Year 6: Job: promotion
Barley was able to secure a regular position in the entertainment business--travelling around the area with an improv/stand-up group. He gets a steady salary that's more than enough for he and Sky to live on. Sky is setting her sights on buying a new house...and maybe a new car. Her minivan is finally beginning to die. Sky is also beginning to think that she and Barley won't ever have children. She is looking into fertility tests to see if there is a problem with either one of them, but Barley isn't so sure he wants to do anything just yet.
Year 7: random: move
Barley and Sky were able to buy a lovely cabin house in the relative wilderness outside the city. Their house used to be a chapel, but has since been renovated for residential living. Sky loves the wide open space that she didn't have in the city. She and Barley also invested in another vehicle. Sky traded in her old minivan for a red Volkswagon Beetle. Sky likes the spunky little car and thinks that it demonstrates her personality well. The only downsides to the year, in Sky's opinion, were that she wasn't able to get pregnant, and Icicle passed away one evening shortly after they moved into the new house. Lilah remained good friends with Icicle throughout his lifespan, and Barley thinks they might need to get another pet to keep her company.
Year 8: Birth: girl: straight brown hair, green eyes; found out about pregnancy in strange way; RB ((word name, starts with Q, X, or U))
Sky was elated to find out that she was pregnant. After seven years, she was beginning to despair. Brooke Xiomara Henshaw was born right on her due date. She has straight brown hair like her daddy, and bright green eyes like her mommy. Brooke is a good first baby--she's quiet, she sleeps a lot, and she makes happy noises when Barley and Sky hold her. Barley loves being a father. He wasn't sure how he would feel about being a father, but when the doctor told him that Sky was pregnant, he knew he'd do fine. He and Sky were at the local county fair, looking to adopt another pet (possibly a dog), when Sky collapsed. The EMTs rushed her to the local emergency room, where Barley was told that Sky simply wasn't getting enough good nutrition for both her and the baby to thrive. Barley doted on his wife for the rest of the pregnancy, and Sky enjoyed the attention.
Year 9: Pet: Cat
Barely a year after their daughter's birth, Barley and Sky decide that its time to get another pet. Lilah just hasn't been the same since Icicle died, and Barley figured another cat might cheer her up. He went to the local ASPCA shelter and picked out a two year old grey tabby cat named Kenza, and proudly presented her to Brooke for her first birthday. Brooke promptly clamped onto Kenza's fur, and Kenza batted her on the head--she'd been declawed. Sky and Brooke enjoy playing with the cats, and Lilah has been much happier since she's had a friend.
Year 10: Random: natural disaster
Barley, Sky, and Brooke were recently forced out of their home by rampaging wildfires in the area. Unfortunately, their lovely little cabin was destroyed. However, Barley was able to find a bit of a fixer-upper for them to live in. It's an old farmhouse, and Sky loves the amount of land on their property. Brooke has taken to toddling around the yard, admiring the birds and other various wildlife. Lilah and Kenza also relocated with the family, and they are quickly turning into proficient mousers.
Year 11: family affair: inheritance
When Barley's old Uncle Pennywagon passed away this past year, Barley went to the funeral out of a sense of obligation, but left Sky and Brooke at home. Barley was shocked to learn that Pennywagon left him all the money he had stashed under his mattress--which amounted to over $75,000! After recovering his wits, Barley collected the money and returned home. He and Sky have been getting calls from Barley's relatives, asking for loans and free money, but Barley isn't parting with it--he's put $50,000 into a special savings account for Brooke so she'll have some money when she grows up. The other part of the money Barley and Sky spent on much-needed repairs around the homestead.
Year 12: Pet: farm animal
Now that Barley, Sky, and Brooke live on several acres, Sky decided it was time to get a horse. She had one as a child--a little pony named Xena. Sky went to a horse auction and brought home a sweet old Appaloosa gelding named Lucky. Brooke, despite being just four years old, has already taken to riding Lucky around the field bareback. Barley is a little afraid of the large animal, but Sky is slowly getting him used to working with the horse. Lucky has a good disposition, and puts up with just about everything.
Year 13: adoption: 2 year old girl from Asia
After some debate, Barley and Sky decided to adopt a child so that Brooke could have a playmate. They chose a two year old girl named Anya Evgeniya from Russia as their new daughter. Anya has short light brown hair and blue eyes. She has taken a bit of time to adjust to living in her new environment, but she and Brooke bonded almost immediately. Brooke loves playing with her new sister, and doesn't seem to care that Anya doesn't speak English, and doesn't really look like her. On the first day that Anya was at home, Brooke took her out to visit Lucky. It was love at first sight for Anya, and Sky has had a hard time getting the girls out of the barn since Anya's arrival.
Year 14: Job: business trip
Barley went on a business trip this year. The Henshaw household was pretty quiet, other than that. Barley's comedy troupe received an invitation to present at a workshop in London, England. Barley enjoyed traveling overseas and would like to take the family there someday.
Year 15: birth: girl, curly brown hair, blue eyes; uneventful birth; VX (associated w/presidents, associated w/scientists and inventors)
At forty years old, Sky unexpectedly got pregnant with her second child. Barley and the other girls were so excited about having a new baby in the house. Reagan Sequoia Henshaw was born two days before her due date, but healthy and without complication. Brooke and Anya welcomed their new little sister with open arms, and they love to play with her.
