In the Kingdom of: Sweetbourne
Shortly after Sidonia's birth, the neighboring country of Luitgard tried to invade Sweetbourne, starting a war that lasted fourteen long years. During much of that time, Nigel fought bravely at the front, sometimes at his father's side but more often with Princess Idriya of Halcyon, a second cousin of his stepmother Eloisa. Nigel and the young warrior princess were rather taken with each other and married impusively after a battle that nearly claimed both their lives.
Around the same time, the king secured an important alliance with the military power of Jor by promising Columba's hand to the eldest prince. Nigel was furious when word finally reached him, but Columba insisted that he needn't rush home and beat some sense into their father (as his letter threatened). She'd met Prince Nikolai and thought him quite sweet, certainly as good a husband as any. She got pregnant shortly after the wedding ceremony and had a beautiful baby boy named Mikhail, or Misha.
The king attempted more political maneuver with his children as incentive but found that his fiery oldest twins were far less receptive to such meddling. At the first sign of suitors, Artemisia and Demetria both ran away to join Nigel at the front. Their furious brother immediately ordered them back home, but the twins were stubborn. Eventually, Nigel allowed them to stay on as medics.
Ariston had just arranged for Hadrian to marry Princess Lorelei of Tremblay when the king was called to the front. Though none of his children were particularly pleased with his recent actions or the way he'd treated the youngest three siblings or Meli for the last fourteen years, they welcomed his sharp military mind and skillful sword. Unfortunately, the king was struck down in that final battle.
Although he'd secured Luitgard's unconditional surrender, Nigel was heartbroken that his father was dead, that he died angry at the man. When his daughter was born within the first year of peace, he named her Ariel after Ariston. When Idriya's father took ill and finally expired, she and Nigel assumed the throne of Halcyon.
Hadrian and Lorelei were considered terribly young to rule, but with Meli, Artemisia, and Demetria as advisors, they did so very well. Sweetbourne enjoyed nearly a decade of peace.
