In the Queendom of: QuadrilleThe Queen is dead! Long live the Queen! Queen Margaret VII (“the Peaceful”) has been slain in battle, exactly like her mother (Queen Elisabeth IV, “The Warrior Queen”)! Many Quadrillians blame that no-good, half-‘Merite bastard, Roland Coldfield, who, firstly, is the reason The Second Quadrille-Forestmere War broke out, and, secondly, became the head of the rebellion shortly after Princess Adelaide turned two-years-old!It seems as though, ever since his father’s death, he has been spying for the Forestmere Rebels! Shortly after Princess Adelaide turned two, Roland ran away, reappearing in Glengarry, Forestmere (the site of his father’s death), calling himself King Roland I, and spouting off about how his goal was to take back Forestmere from the Quadrillians! Unfortunately, Roland had inherited his father’s brilliant tactical mind and, slowly but surely, the Quadrillian and Viridani troops lost ground.Over the next five years, every effort was made by the Queen to reason with Roland. Surely this could not be the same boy she raised, practically since infancy? But every effort was ignored until the Queen decided to go to the battlegrounds herself. By this time, the battle had reached the very outskirts of Quadrille. The Queen demanded an audience with her step-son, who granted it. They met in the middle of the battle grounds, completely devoid of weapons and army. No one will ever know what was said in that meeting, but it seemed to take hours; the respective armies grew nervous. Suddenly, there was a twang and an arrow sprouted from Queen Margaret’s back. It seems as though a young officer of the Quadrillian Army, eager to prove himself, had tried to kill Roland Coldfield and got his Queen, instead.King Roland, after a moment, declared a truce, right in the middle of the battlefield. He knelt next to and held his step-mother while she died; those who were close enough could hear his racking sobs. Immediately, a messenger was dispatched to the Quadrillian palace. The Crown Princess was named Queen Elisabeth V (she chose her regnal name in honor of her grandmother). The new Queen and the old King left for the battlefield, but were met by King Roland at the border between Forestmere and Quadrille.King Roland, who had been carrying the Queen’s body the whole way, laid Queen Margaret’s body at the feet of his half-sister. Those close enough to hear heard him say, “I only wanted Forestmere under Forestmere control; I never wanted this to happen.” The new Queen Elisabeth kissed her brother on the forehead, and they embraced, both weeping for the mother they’d lost. When they were done, Queen Elisabeth made her first proclamation, recognizing Forestmere as its own country once more and declaring peace between the Quadrillians and the Forestmerites. King Roland then made the same declaration to his own people. And, while hatred still runs deep within the common people, the Royal Families of Quadrille and Forestmere are sure it will pass.Queen Elisabeth V, then looking for a husband, decided to marry her step-father’s younger nephew, also named Bartholomew. There was some talk of her marrying his older nephew, Archduke Heinrich of Viridian (son of King Heinrich II, “the Level-Headed”), but as the Viridani throne is patriarchal and the Quadrillian throne matriarchal, neither could rule equally in both countries.Shortly after the Royal Marriage, Queen Elisabeth announced she was pregnant! Nine months later, a Crown Princess was born, named for Queen Elisabeth’s mother, father, and step-father. King Roland was named her godfather.
